A weird mix of whimsical and horrifying. It's a fun alternate take on beauty and the beast and definitely quite different from the movie. The writing is good. You really get a sense of the main character's humour and good nature and how that contrasts with the horror of the situation she ends up in. Bryony's resilience in trying to unravel the mystery of the house and the Beast and what is really going on pulls you in and makes you root for her. It all seems to be building up to something, but then the ending just happens and it feels a little abrupt. The specific details of the story revealed at the end are interesting, but a slower reveal and more struggle might have been more satisfying. It seemed like they should have had to work for it more. The tone of the ending is also a little bittersweet, although overall still not bad. Bryony is a great character to follow though so even if the ending could have been built out more it's still a satisfying time getting there. The book is worth a try, especially for those interested in alternate takes on fairy tales and anyone a fan of the author's writing style. The narration is great and suits the book well.

A fun, sweet, and quirky retelling of Beauty and the Beast, this is a great little story about a gardener who finds herself trapped in a cursed house with a beast.

The characters all have the awkward but endearing charm of T. Kingfisher characters, with Bryony being a slightly naive gardener in an extraordinary situation. She steps up to the plate and grows into a strong character, making her a perfect match for the lonely Beast.

The story is easy to enjoy in a single sitting and full of charm. I loved it!

This is not an enemies-to-lovers trope, which I enjoy. The characters could have been a bit more complex but overall, a cute retelling of Beauty and the Beast. Note that, although this is a romance, there is very minimal steam in this book.
