Either Dragonflight or Dragonsong are the best books to enter Pern through. Dragonflight begins with the intense strength and singleminded determination of Lessa, bent on avenging the murder of her entire family, and the passionate vision of F’lar, the only dragon rider who believes a long absent enemy attacking from the sky will soon return. Very soon. McCaffrey’s true gift is with world building, but the character development in this book is gradual and plausible. The most entertaining and lovable ‘person’ in this novel is Mnementh, F’lar’s dragon. He’s such a character and provides comic relief in a novel full of danger and action, interspersed with times of quiet desperation and introspection. As you’d expect, the narrator’s pronunciation of place and people’s names may differ from yours if you’ve read the series before, but the voice is great.

Pern is the fictional world that has occupied a huge chunk of real estate in my imagination for most of my life!

I first read Dragonflight in 1968 from my Highschool library. Since then I bought my own copy, bought it on KOBO and after vision loss I bought it on Audible Canada. The narrator did an incredible job. It was almost like a video, the story came to life as I listened to the familiar story, I heard the story in a different way than when any of the times I had previously read it. If you are an Anne McCaffrey fan or even if you have never read her try this audible book (and many of the rest of the Pern series).

This is a timeless classic by Anne McCaffery the first of many and genesis of Pern. Here we see Ruatha Hold and hear Master Robinton for the first time. Dick Hill performs a fair reading of this masterpiece.

Love the story. The narration was ruined by the distinction in tone between characters when speaking. The narration was pleasant to listen to UNTIL the narrator speaks as one of the characters... Especially his version of the character F'lar. It was so over the top with machismo it was jarring and would instantly bring me out of the story. What a horrid voice! It nearly ruined the entire listening experience and I considered not continuing on--but did, for the love of McCaffrey's novels.
Male narrators need to tone down their misogyny when the choose voices for the characters.
