Publisher's Summary

A world-renowned authority on the science of alcohol exposes its influence on our health, mood, sleep, emotions, and productivity - and what we can and should do to moderate our intake.

From after-work happy hour to a nightly glass of wine, we're used to thinking of alcohol as a normal part of our daily lives. In Drink?, neuropharmacology professor David Nutt takes a fascinating, science-based look at drinking to unpack why we should reconsider our favorite pastime.

Using cutting-edge scientific research and years of hands-on experience in the field, Nutt delves into the long- and short-term effects of alcohol. He addresses topics such as hormones, mental health, fertility, and addiction, explaining how alcohol travels through our bodies and brains, what happens at each stage of inebriation, and how it effects us even after it leaves our systems. With accessible, easy-to-understand language, Nutt ensures that listeners recognize why alcohol can have such a negative influence on our bodies and our society. In the vein of This Naked Mind, Drink? isn't preachy; it simply gives listeners clear, evidence-based facts to help them make the most informed choices about their consumption.

Fantastic informative book

This book is an uptodate description of the effects of alcohol on our bodies and how to manage it (the book does Not preach abstinence). The studies described are highly relevant. Given how information heavy it is, I am amazed at how interesting he kept it. It's captivating, I had difficulty putting it down. The final chapter about the politics and policies that would work and why they are shut down shows how big alcohol has learned lessons from big tobacco, at society's expense. I love that Dr Nutt narrated himself. Listened at 1.25x

Brilliant, fact based and compassionate

I absolutely loved this book. As a health practitioner and someone exploring her own relationship to alcohol consumption, this book has been monumental in understanding the risks of alcohol consumption and has allowed me to confidently reduce my drinking to mostly no consumptions except on special occasions, from drinking excessively many times a week. If you are struggling with your consumption and feel you want an expert explanation of how alcohol works biologically, psychologically, socially and emotionally please read this book.

David Nutt’s harm reduction approach and compassionate delivery, along with his deeply researched content, makefor an incredibly powerful book that should be on every individual’s book shelf.
