Publisher's Summary

This morning, my daughter sat right here, munching her breakfast, too excited to finish it. Now, she is missing.

The day after her ninth birthday, Lucie and Blake Sullivan agree, for the very first time, to let their daughter, Grace, make the four-minute walk back home alone from a friend’s house just down the street.

They joke with friends about hiding behind bushes to ensure she is safe. But the joke turns sour when Grace does not appear.

Despite the best efforts of the police and local community, Grace seems to have vanished into thin air. With hope fading fast, Lucie knows she can rely on her husband to support her through such dark times. That is until the day she makes a shocking discovery, hidden in Blake’s desk, and suddenly she begins to doubt everything she knew about the man she married.

But Lucie harbours a terrible secret of her own. One that she has never shared with anyone, even Blake....

And as the search for Grace reaches fever pitch, Lucie receives a terrifying message. If she is ever to see Grace again, Lucie has no choice but to face the past she tried hard to bury forever. And she must do it alone.

The most gripping psychological thriller you’ll listen to this year from the best-selling author K.L. Slater. If you love The Wife Between Us or Gone Girl, you’ll be totally hooked on Finding Grace.

Great story!

I really enjoyed the story! I had just had to keep listening to find out what happened in the end. I did guess one of the twists but most of them were a mystery right up until they were revealed. The narrator was quite good, a few of the female voices sounded a bit similar but I certainly enjoyed the narration all the same.

Yes, It's Formulaic..

..but the formula *works*.
You know what you're going to get with a K.L. Slater Psychological Suspense Thriller: a story revealed in multiple timelines from multiple perspectives; dysfunctional characters - even the sympathetic ones - verging on the pathological; and a friend/lover/colleague "unexpectedly" revealed as a secretive villain motivated by revenge for a past trauma. It can get annoyingly stereotypical.
Fortunately, however, Slater is good at it. The writing is capable (if unspectacular - the author isn't going to win any awards any time soon), the plot twists/revelations are paced beautifully (never boring and the drip-drip-drip technique renews interest frequently), and the voyeuristic pleasure a reader/listener gets from watching her well-written examples of human disasters is guiltily delicious (like "rubbernecking" at an accident).
If you can get past the moderate predictability, these stories are most enjoyable.

The outstanding narration by Lucy Price-Lewis definitely improves my opinion of Slater books in general, and this one in particular. In this offering, her spot-on diction, timbre, and cadence are matched with pitch-perfect tonality and impressive voice-acting. Given a choice between a text version of 'Finding Grace' and this audiobook iteration.. choose this one.

Altogether, the recording rates 7 stars out of 10 - despite the book being one of Slater's weaker efforts. If you can get it (as I did) included with your subscription, you should absolutely do so. If Audible asks for a Credit, it may still be worth it for you if you can ignore the cookie-cutter execution/conclusion. Either way, you're not crazy.

[Note: the ubiquity of cell phones among 1990s University kids is a strikingly ludicrous plot element. It's a little hard to swallow]

Meh

This just felt so dragged out and the dad drama was so random. I didn’t expect the ending, I’ll give you that. I just wasn’t really into this book, the main character bothered me.

Fast and entertaining

My first book by this author and it won’t be my last, after all I had purchased 13 books based on the blurb. Yeah.., silly me.

This book started very well.
It was so engaging that I read it in one sitting.
I enjoyed the writing and the book structure, although I wished that there were more than one POV.
The storyline is good, but a bit far-fetched, so take it as it is, a work of fiction.
The conclusion felt rushed, but then this book is not that big. It is definitely a fast read and I wasn’t bored at any moment. Unfortunately I did not feel the thrill that was promised.
I don’t like small coincidences or scenes where the villain feels the need to explain why it had to happen. But that’s me.
Overall it was a very easy and very entertaining read.

Just OK

This one was not as good as her usual books. Found it a bit choppy and not put together well. Her jumping from present to past just wasn’t a smooth as usual.

My first mystery book in ages

I’m really glad I read this book. It’s a Jonder I don’t read often, but was captivated from the first chapter. There are many twists and turns I guessed some of the ending, but it was still a surprise. The main character frustrated me a fair bit but only because I didn’t agree with her.

I give up

OK, I am getting annoyed now, with the way this book was described, it sounded excellent. However, reading it I am getting really frustrated. Also this just adds to my long list of recent books that have characters in it that I think are weak, and just basically stupid. I wish that we had more authors write books about strong, independent, smart women. I’m not talking about making mistakes in our lives, I’m talking about how we learn and grow, and stand up for what we believe in, and as I teach my own daughter, paying the consequences for their own behavior. Anyway, let’s hope my next read is better. Are usually love this author, but this book is dreadful.

Can anyone actually be so GULLIBLE?

This was difficult for me to finish. The foolish Lucy is hard to swallow. She's difficult to relate to because she is so profoundly unbelievable., as are the rest of the one dimensional characters in the book. The narration was better than the story, but just barely. She sounded screechy and squeaky when delivering female lines, and flat and stuffy when speaking as a male. Save your time and money on this one, and pass it by.

Frustrating Read!

This book was awful. Every single conflict arose from either complete stupidity on the part of the main character or something completely unrealistic happening. I have been a victim of some of the same circumstances the main character was a victim to and I have two children the same age range and gender as hers, and I still could not relate to her at all. At every opportunity, she was the dumb girl in the horror movie that walks into the basement. One call to the police at any point in her story could have stopped everything.
I gave it two stars overall simply because the narrator was fine.

Finding Grace, tediously

The story was actually good. I felt it was tedious because at least the first half had not so much story with people doing things, but the majority of the time with Lucinda going on and on about how she felt, her suspicions, and her overall mental state. Once we got past that, and into more of the ‘16 years ago’ alternating chapters the story moved much faster, and had much more meat to keep your attention. The ending was almost too fast in contrast to the slower portions. But it was a very good job of tying up the loose ends.

I normally enjoy K.L. Slater.. but..

I normally enjoy most books by Slater but this one wasn't great. The premise is good, but the characters are not likable. I wanted to slap the mom who was missing her child, and the father wasn't much better. I felt it dragged and became uninteresting, which is a shame.

I would likely buy this on discount, but I wouldn't waste a credit on it.

Disappointing

I enjoyed the beginning of the book but as it progressed it was ridiculous. The main character makes one unbelievably bad decision after another until I wanted to scream. The story was improbable and Lucy was a weak and annoying character.

Boring Until The Last Hour

No Spoilers! Not enough suspense and I found the main character to be a bore. There were some twists at the end but I could see them coming early on. The main character was quite dim and I found her annoying. The only excellent part was the narrator.

If you like lots of drama with minimal suspense then you may enjoy this book.

Disappointing.

Shallow, unlikeable characters, an implausible plot and a poor narrative.

There are many good books and good authors in this genre where the characters fill the pages and the story grips until the end, but this is not one of them.

Out of respect for the author and a commitment to myself to finishing every book I purchase, I hung in until the end although I found I eventually had to increase the narrative speed so as not to prolong the agony.

If it’s quality and fine writing you want try Peter Grainger’s delightful Inspector DC Smith series, or any of Adrian McGinty’s excellent novels. I don’t think you’ll find it here.

Don't waste your time....

Struggled to finish, it was really drawn out with nothing really happening until the very end and the main character made me want to scream....
