Publisher's Summary

Michelle was a young single mother when she was kidnapped by a local school bus driver named Ariel Castro. For more than a decade afterward, she endured unimaginable torture at the hand of her abductor. In 2003 Amanda Berry joined her in captivity, followed by Gina DeJesus in 2004. Their escape on May 6, 2013, made headlines around the world.

Barely out of her own tumultuous childhood, Michelle was estranged from her family and fighting for custody of her young son when she disappeared. Local police believed she had run away, so they removed her from the missing persons lists fifteen months after she vanished. Castro tormented her with these facts, reminding her that no one was looking for her, that the outside world had forgotten her. But Michelle would not be broken.

Amazing & strong

Michelle Knight is an amazing & strong woman! Listening to her story was tragic & sad. I give her do much credit for her amazing strength for all she had to endure. It was sad to her story. I wish her all the luck in her future, as she truly deserves happiness.

A harrowing tale

What Michelle experienced was nothing short of some of the worst things ive ever heard. She clearly has an incredible will to live. The downside of the book, though no fault of her own due to the lack of education, is that the true impact of the story is subdued. You can only hear her refer to her captor as 'the Dude' so many times before you start thinking of the Big Lebowski. It's unfortunate that her editor did not assist in a way that would reflect how truly horrendous it was.

Wonderful recount of an unimaginable situation

I remember these women being saved and have always wondered what happened to them after they were freed. Michelle is the one of the 3 I remember most. This account of what can only be described as a horrific situation was well told and for the most part well written. I can’t imagine the strength she needed to get where she is today snd the compassion she has for a life that has wronged her so much.

A miraculously positive story

I was inspired to listen to this audiobook after listening to a podcast on the Cleveland kidnappings by Generation Why.

It took me a little while to warm up to the narrator, but I am finding that as I listen to more audiobooks, the style of the narrator always takes getting used to. By the end of the book I associated her voice with Michelle very naturally.

I think I was attracted by morbid curiosity at first, wanting to know the details of the kidnappings. But I found Michelle's history of her life before being kidnapped equally gripping, and it really helps you understand why she isn't interested in talking to the rest of her family now. I became very invested in Michelle as a person, and ended up reading a lot of her updates on her life after the book was written.

While Gina and Amanda's book barely mentions Michelle, Michelle's book does mention them. Many people have a lot to say about that, and they have all released statements on why that is. But I found that even in Michelle's book, a lot more of the book was devoted to how she felt and how she was experiencing the variety of events happening to her, how she was dealing with them and her emotions, than to the relationship between her and the other women. The statements regarding the other girls, like Amanda's daughter Jocelyn, are very general. She loved Jocelyn, but she didn't really delve quite so deeply into her emotions about having Jocelyn in the house when she was unable to bring her own pregnancies to term. I don't think Michelle owes us an explanation for any of this, but you should be aware that there isn't much of one.

The entire book generally focuses on how Michelle was able to stay positive and keep fighting. It reads to me that she wrote this book with survivors in mind, which speaks to the work she has chosen to pursue in her freedom.

This isn't the type of book that I normally read, but I would recommend it.

Keeps you glued to the story. A real life horror story and an ending that never ends. I couldn't stop listening. This is the first time I have heard of recorded books. I actually stumble upon it by mistake. But I was glad I did. I will be using this much more.
This was a great, real life story of hell on earth. Brave, brave girl. What a horrific life. Sounds like it's gotten so much better. I really wish Michelle all the best in her future endeavors.

a true heroine

So amazingly written. To be able to to tell one's own story with such raw, honesty is nothing short of heroic. What a beautiful soul Michelle is, to be able to keep her faith while being held, to to be a loving, empathic, compassionate person following her escape speaks to how incredible she truly is. Hold your head high Michelle, and keep on shining. You are making your mark on this world. I pray one day you will be able to hold your son in your arms again.

alright, not the best written

The story is obviously interesting, but there's a few books out there about it. Probably much, much better books.

The writing isn't engaging, the book doesn't hold your attention. The author doesn't describe things in detail and is so vague sometimes, that it leaves you guessing as to what's actually going on.

The narrator sounds like a child, coupled with the writing I feel like I'm listening to a story narrated by a 12 year old.

I would pass and find another book.

I gave this a go because of all the positive reviews. but wish I had chosen differently.
