Publisher's Summary
The acclaimed author of I Wish You Love, Karen Chilton explores the life of legendary jazz performer and civil rights activist Hazel Scott. A well-researched tribute to a woman of immense achievement, Hazel Scott abounds with fascinating detail of a not-too-distant time in American history.
Born in Trinidad, Hazel and her family moved to New York City during the Roaring Twenties. Hazel displayed a startling musical talent, and the remarkable wonder child received an audition at Juilliard at the tender age of eight years. In her teens, she became a fixture at the celebrated Café Society, the Big Apple's first fully integrated nightclub.
Embarking on a career in Hollywood in the 1940s and '50s, Hazel continued a staunch advocacy of civil rights even as she reached ever-greater heights of stardom.
