Chr., als Markgraf Otto der Reiche Leipzig das Stadtrecht verlieh. Dieses beinhaltete damals weitreichende Privilegien. So entwickelte sich Leipzig, das an den Handelsstraßen Via Emperii (Reichsstraße) und Via Regia (Königsstraße) lag, zu einer der wichtigsten Handelsmetropolen der damaligen Zeit. Die Leipziger Messe gilt bis heute als die älteste der Welt.
