Audible Editor Reviews

A colossal and staggering take on the future of mankind, James S. A. Corey brings his latest and arguably his best, Leviathan Wakes: The Expanse, Book 1 as a full and unabridged audiobook, narrated by the brilliant Jefferson Mays. This series depicts a populated solar system and the demise of Earth’s resources. Planetary unrest is brimming between the colonies, human and alien alike. With the fateful discovery of a deeply-rooted secret, a full-fledged war could be the ultimate ending of it all. This is utterly spellbinding. Available now from Audible.

Publisher's Summary

Humanity has colonized the planets - interstellar travel is still beyond our reach, but the solar system has become a dense network of colonies. But there are tensions - the mineral-rich outer planets resent their dependence on Earth and Mars and the political and military clout they wield over the Belt and beyond.

Now, when Captain Jim Holden's ice miner stumbles across a derelict, abandoned ship, he uncovers a secret that threatens to throw the entire system into war. Attacked by a stealth ship belonging to the Mars fleet, Holden must find a way to uncover the motives behind the attack, stop a war and find the truth behind a vast conspiracy that threatens the entire human race.

What the critics say

"It's been too long since we've had a really kickass space opera. Leviathan Wakes is interplanetary adventure the way it ought to be written, the kind of SF that made me fall in love with the genre way back when, seasoned with a dollop of horror and a dash of noir. Jimmy Corey writes with the energy of a brash newcomer and the polish of a seasoned pro" (George R. R. Martin)
"A winning blend of old-school space opera and modern sensibility... Corey combines no-nonsense storytelling with hard-boiled dialogue as the novel races to a truly cosmic ending. An excellent start to a promising new series" ( The Telegraph)
"Corey... has created a refreshingly blue-collar tale, with well-drawn characters and a compelling narrative sweep. Roll on Book Two." ( Financial Times)
"If you love tales packed with worldbuildy details like how humans cored asteroids, pumped them full of atmosphere, and spun them up for gravity's sake, then you'll love this novel to pieces" ( io9)

SciFi detective thriller

Excellent piece of storytelling. Performance is somewhat flat, but consistent. A number of common words are oddly mispronounced, but the performer has a calming reading voice and tempo.

hard to follow the story

It was a hard to follow book due to a monovoice narator. multitone with expression but just no voice changing. a reading. I did not get captivated by the story. Always expecting the action that never came. will get the other books in the serie anyway... expecting the action to start sometime.

Fantastic series

Although the tv series does exist, it is really nice to be able to hear the actual written story as well. Having it on #Audible1 and being able to listen to it in my car on my way to work makes the commute into a relaxing moment in the day. The narration in this series is very good and easy to listen to. The TV series is very similar to the books, but a few of the characters have slightly different motivations than in the tv show. Also, it is nice to be able to hear a character's inner thoughts too. These are never conveyed well in a tv series. Definitely worth getting this one.

Apart from listening in my car, I use the #Audible1 app on my Sonos system at home. It all patched together very easily.

Totally recommend both the books and #Audible1 .

Such a great story ( All the books )

I'm now on book 7 and have been extremely hooked on this series since book #1. The story is well written with really cool characters and the narrator, Jefferson Mays, it a pleasure to listen to. I'm pretty sure i'll move on to other books he narrates while I wait on book 8 and 9 of this series.

I highly recommend this book to anyone that enjoys a good sci-fi fantasy, with a catchy story and situations that will keep you hooked.

I don't want to give away anything but I have a feeling that if you just listen to the first 3-4 chapters of book 1, you find yourself in the same situation as me a few months later... waiting on the next book and watching the TV series asking yourself why they changed it so much?!? Hopefully Amazon can make it amazing.

First book on audible.

Loved it. Different than The Expanse series in TV, but I liked the crew dynamic in the book more.

Enjoyment

Book is so much better than the TV series. Nice mixture of predictable and surprise. Narrated very well - narrator never attempts to get in the way of the story, just like Holden and Miller. Enjoyed the book very much.

Hard meta-science-fiction

Recommended for readers of detective, suspense, and science fiction alike. The discomfort from the ragged edges of the deeply flawed main characters— almost caricatures borrowed from noir— is lifted by the relatability of the Everyman secondary characters who love them.
The plot, like the Leviathan antagonist, is simply too complex to sum up in a short review. Fans of Star Trek, the Matrix, and late-20th-c hard sci-fi will all have reference points to navigate from, though, as Corey paints his impression of one possible collision of an extra-solar force with the inward-looking politics of humanity.
The actor’s performance was excellent by virtue of his character voice, and the direction recreated the warm feel of a well-thumbed paperback. Highly recommended.

Worst book i ever listened to

Might as well have copied and pasted the book on one of those programs that read it out loud with a robot voice.

There is zero acting, zero character diversification, i don't know who's talking and if it's a female, a male, a old man or a kid untill at the end of the sentence he says ".... Name said". It's awful.

I'm 9 hours into it and so far the story is about problems not solving themselves and stacking up to a point that i'm staeting to forget how it started.

How did this series get so many positive reviews?

Sci-fi that doesn't forget the "Sci" in Sci-fi.

I moved the show on TV. But as usual, the book is more deep story wise, and I really like how the characters are in the books. It is worth a read even if you have seen the show.

Excellent

This is one of the best Sci Fi book I've ever read. The universe is complex and James S.A. Corey really worked on it but he also has a gift for writing.
He has a very good grasp of our society and people. Every character is different and seems real, with emotion and depth.
The technological aspects are also plausible and the fact that it only take place in our solar system make it so much closer to us than most Sci Fi stories.
I also love that everything takes times. Not just few hours but days, even months. We forget too often that exploring space means so vast distances it take a lot of time to cross.

If like me you seen the TV series first, you will not be disappointed but you should still read the books. ;-)

And last but not least Jefferson Mays is one hell of a narrator !
