The Wilds relentlessly reclaim all things. Humanity shelters within their ever-dying cities. Mages create the only path forward.

Tala had to fight tooth and nail in the Magic Academy to forge a path to power that was her own. She knows it’s her duty to use that power to serve humanity, defending them against the creatures of the untamable wilds. However, she skipped a few steps in her education, like apprenticing to someone who actually knows what they’re doing.

Now, Tala has to balance learning as fast as she can with paying off the veritable mountain of debt the Magic Academy dropped on her shoulders for the opportunity; not to mention staying alive.

Even though she should only be a Mageling, the world considers her a Mage. Bless the stars she directed most of her magic toward survival.

Personally I loved this. The magic system is interesting and the main character's lack of knowledge is entirely understandable and thus when lore and information is slowly revealed it feels completely natural. I love the main character and she feels sooooo relatable but also a little unhinged if you think about her completely objectively, even moreso when you put yourself in other characters shoes. She succeeds a LOT but honestly it's about as much luck as it is skill. Personally I find the contrast between her success in crazy situations versus her absolutely terrible at times social awareness super fascinating.

I'll admit what would traditionally be seen as the main plot going in really feels more like the setting, with the true meat of the book being the character discovering the world and magic alongside the reader. Her thoughts and introspection as she discovers new things is almost as enjoyable as her reactions and the ending has me so excited to listen to the rest where I'm possible things are going to get pretty insane in the absolutely BEST way

insanely good

This story is actually very relatable despite the fantasy setting - MC is a fresh graduate, broke under heavy student loans, but gained some advantage due to her out-of-the-box thinking and hard work, found a job intended for experienced mages, and then it's fake it until you make it. Usually I would not have liked a book with no significant progression, but here, MC's experiments with her new magical abilities are truely facinating, mainly due to the well fleshed out magic system where physics still works (e.g. gravity magic doesn't care about target's size or weight and it can effect space/time ... finally someone got it correct)

very enjoyable despite no significant progression

I loved this book for the slow exploration of the world and the main characters place in it.

Bought the second one instantly. It’s that good.

Absolutely excellent book

Description seemed in my wheelhouse, but I didn’t think I’d like the book as much as I did. Drew me in and had me listening until the end. Between the magic system, the progression and the world building, I found myself very impressed and thoroughly enthralled.
MC is by no means OP, just quirky. Insta purchased book 2.

Way impressed

This story is a giant nothing burger. Bizarre point of view shifts between first and third person. A MC that has almost zero flaws and is perfect at everything and never has to try.

If you want a slice of life book that is mostly just about a person getting a job while strange esoteric magic is slowly drip fed to you, and where the character doesn't struggle with anything. Then maybe you'll enjoy this book, I would personally find watching grass grow just as enjoyable.

Even having bought this book on Sale for $7 it's an enormous rip off. I want my money back. If the author sees this you owe me $7 and hours of my life back.
