Publisher's Summary
Fifteen-year-old Kendra hasn't felt safe since she began to recall devastating memories of childhood sexual abuse, especially because she still can't remember the most important detail: her abuser's identity. Frightened, Kendra believes someone is always watching and following her, leaving menacing messages only she understands. If she lets her guard down even for a minute, it could cost Kendra her life. To relieve the pressure, Kendra cuts; aside from her brilliantly expressive artwork, it's her only way of coping. Since her own mother is too self-absorbed to hear her cries for help, Kendra finds support in others instead, from her therapist and her art teacher, from Sandy, the close family friend who encourages her artwork, and from Meghan, the classmate who's becoming a friend - and maybe more. But the truth about Kendra's abuse is just waiting to explode, with startling, unforeseen consequences. Scars is the unforgettable story of one girl's frightening path to the truth.

Relatable
This book is an art pice. It’s so relatable and it’s very Engaging. Scars is a story of love. A story of fear. A story of pain. And most importantly, it is a story of healing. I adored it.

very interesting read!
this was my first book by Cheryl rainfield. that being said, I didn't really know what to expect. I will tell you that I really like dark things comma so I really enjoyed this book. I appreciated the author's style and the power in her words. As I said before though it is a really dark book so I will say that it could be triggering for some people comma butt it's a very interesting read or make that listen and I will definitely be listening again. Plus on a side note the narrator did a really awesome job with the story as well.

Not what I was expecting.
I truly hate giving bad reviews on these. I know the authors pour their heart and souls out but this just wasn’t for me. The main protagonists really romanticized cutting which I never could fully wrap my head around. If that’s what worked for her by all means. But it wasn’t even a “I never cut again” type thing even in the end she still spoke about how she used it to help.. which is not something I would personally do. The constant mention of hands on her wrist and breath on her neck was overused MAJORLY and each time I heard a sentence starting off with it or mentioning it k would jump ahead because it was just reused over and over. If this is a true story I feel absolutely terribly for the person(s) involved, but honestly I just was not impressed with the overall story or writing. The book just was not for me. Normally it takes me less than a day to finish these but I found myself constantly skipping ahead or jumping to this for background noise as I worked. The reader made it tolerable as best she could but again.. just not something I would ever read or listen to again.

Trigger Warning!
This was a great book to listen to. There are a lot of triggers about suicide, self harm and sexual assault. The dad’s voice was a little iffy, but altogether it kept my interest. Could help some look out for signs of self harm and suicide.

You will be concerned (invested in Kendra’s life)
Keeps you guessing what is really happening. Some “tender” moments might start to take me out of the story but I soon realize I have become enraged at the actions, words or even inactions of certain characters and how horrific some humans can truly be. You feel for multiple characters at once, each with a different view on same subject, but will likely scoff out loud when one of them eventually says something untoward.

Was any research done?
First of all, why are we ending in the middle of a conversation? Like, almost mid-sentence. Factual details were not researched: why would someone with a gunshot wound be allowed to just romp off with her therapist and girlfriend of one week? Medical attention, crime scene photos? Nope, handhold with my girlfriend of less than a week. And seriously, what’s with the repressed memories? Of 3 years? In her own childhood bedroom? Haunted by her own father? That’s not how things work. Please, take a minute to review these facts.

scars
I loved the narration of this book. I thought Emily Bauer did an excellent job making the story come to life. However I found the story itself lacking a little investgating on the subject of child abuse and repressed memories. This girl was supposed to have been raped at a very young age... and often. it's a known fact that child abuse is usually committed by a family member or very close family friend. usually the father.. but not always. her therapist should have been aware of this fact and helped her realize her abuser was probably someone very close to her.
this kind of ruined the story for me because these Al facts that you can find anywhere but these people seemed clueless.
