Told from four-year-old Laura's point of view, this story begins in 1871 in a little log cabin on the edge of the Big Woods of Wisconsin. Laura lives in the little house with her pa, her ma, her sisters Mary and Carrie, and their trusty dog, Jack. Pioneer life is sometimes hard for the family, since they must grow or catch all their own food as they get ready for the cold winter. But it is also exciting as Laura and her family celebrate Christmas with homemade toys and treats, do the spring planting, bring in the harvest, and make their first trip into town.

Story
The Vanderbeekers have always lived in the brownstone on 141st Street. It's practically another member of the family. So when their reclusive, curmudgeonly landlord decides not to renew their lease, the five siblings have 11 days to do whatever it takes to stay in their beloved home and convince the dreaded Beiderman just how wonderful they are. And all is fair in love and war when it comes to keeping their home. A modern classic in the making reminiscent of the Penderwicks series.

Rabbits with swords!
Great story, good narrator. Warning: every chapter ends in a cliff hanger so stop midchapter if you don't want your kids begging for more! (they still will but they will be slightly less desperate)

A new classic in juvenile-medieval-animal.
Compares well to coming-of-age fantasy series like Harry Potter, Wingfeather, etc.
Not quite Tolkien, though obviously not trying to be that.
The theme of rebuilding and cooperation and trust really worked and makes me excited to read more of these and give them to my kids. Civilization goals, to be sure.
The family drama plot works quite well. I'm not sure the big "surprise" plot point works as well as it could have, but maybe I missed some nuances that would help the names make more sense and the secret be more believable.
The political intrigue concepts — honor, dishonour, loyalty — are handled in a much more satisfying way than is typical in the genre. I hope for some great payoffs in this regard. I recommend the book for this point alone.
I liked the use of alliterative metre in passages early on, though it wasn't quite consistent enough to really pay off in a high-art kind of way.
The pseudo-medieval pseudo-naturalistic setting was fine, but I really hope Smith gets more invested in the world building.
***
Narration: Clarkson does a great job with the villains, and his take on the song brought a tear to my eye.
That said, his narration is a bit wooden, and I think a few lines missed the intended emphasis altogether. I'll assume he's working without a coach or director and say: I look forward to hearing an improvement in later readings. I know how difficult reading is, but these are full-priced Audible releases so I expected a bit more polish on the performance.
