Slices of various quality stitched together for a solid whole

This ‘book’ is a bunch of short programs with Martin Sheen as a short of narrator linking together clips of period recordings and historians talking on different themes. Selected bits of archived material, framed by a historian, framed by Martin Sheen, linked into repeating offerings of the same. At the bottom some bits aren’t the best, some of the episodes didn’t have quite enough filling and others felt cut short to fit whatever the original release format was.
As a whole recommended.

Interesting listen for WWII history buffs

I have been fascinated with WWII for a long time, it's lead me to buy books on it, do courses in history at Memorial University and it certainly influenced me when I found this on Audible.

Martin Sheen has a great voice, he's an excellent actor and his narration here is superb. That said he doesn't have a lot to do, mainly he just guides us from one audio excerpt to another but still, I would certainly listen to him read another book if I found it.

This is a very interesting collection as you get to hear audio clips from the 30's and 40's from a huge variety of people. All the way from Hitler, to Roosevelt, to average Amerian citizens to modern interviews with authors and Academics. I thought it started off a little slow, before America enters WWII it was a little less interesting for me, once that happens, however, each episode is excellent.

I should add here that this contains some very adult content, a little bit of swearing, use of the N-word and graphic descriptions of combat in war, the effects of nuclear attacks and descriptions from concentration cramps. There were 3-4 episodes that were hard to listen to as they were just sad, depressing and disturbing but it's very important to know history and I'm glad I listen to them.

I really enjoyed how every episode dealt with a different topic and hearing old interviews from the 30s and 40s was fantastic. WWII changed the world forever and it's more important now than ever that we learn from our mistakes and watch out for this fragile world we live in. I would recommend this to anyone who is a fan of non-fiction history. I got it for free for being a member of Audible but I think it's well worth paying for. It gave me a better grasp of what the US was like both before, during and after WWII and further brought home just how horrendous the Holocaust was. Please don't let children listen to this, ages 18+.

Very educational!

I learned a lot about the great impact of this war on society and history. The book includes many interesting aspects and enriches the information with audio files from the people involved.
