Publisher's Summary

It takes a few wrong turns to find the right way.

Paul thought he was on his way. From a small-town Connecticut kid to the most prestigious consulting firm in the world, he had everything he thought he wanted. Yet he decided to walk away and embark on the "real work" of his life - finding the things that matter and daring to create a life to make them happen.

This Pathless Path is about finding yourself in the wrong life, and the real work of figuring out how to live. Through painstaking experiments, living in different countries and the goodwill of people from around the world, Paul pieces together a set of ideas and principles that guide him from unfulfilled and burned out to the good life and all of the existential crises in between.

The Pathless Path is not a how-to book filled with “hacks”; instead, it is a vulnerable account of Paul’s journey from leaving a path centered around getting ahead and towards another, one focused on doing work that matters. This book is an ideal companion for people considering leaving their jobs, embarking on a new path, dealing with the uncertainty of an unconventional path, or searching for better models for thinking about work in a fast-changing world.

A great listen

A simplistic perspective on how to conquer your obstacles. A great listen to those struggling with growing.

Great self help book themed around work

This is a great self help book, and I like how it takes a slightly different flavor by being theming around work and money. If you, like me, are having questions about your career and where it is right now, this is a great book for perspective, ideas and finding what you want to work for

I also like that Paul offered both a story of his life along with his advice from research and life experience. This is refreshing compared to many self help books that just stuff their way of living as the best or only way down your throat. Paul instead is taking you along in his questions, and what he decided to make of them along the way.

Like a drive through the countryside…

Like a drive through the countryside, Millerd’s book is mostly monotonous with the occasional interesting sight.

The Pathless Path is a book that itself seems to have no path, instead haphazardly taking readers on a mishmash journey through quotes and experiences from other people to bolster the author’s own assertions and ideas.

More than half of the book is dedicated to giving the reader the encouragement and the bravery to get out of the rat race. Too little of the book is spent talking about Millerd’s own experiences in embracing a life on a “pathless path” - and when he does talk about his own experiences, he holds back on the details, leaving the reader wanting a lot more.

Millerd’s book draws heavy influence from Tim Ferris’ books - especially “The Four Hour Workweek” - but is not a how-to guide like Ferris’ book and is not a captivating story, either.

If you need encouragement to take the first step beyond societal norms, then this book might be for you… but, if you are looking for something more profound, something deeper, then I suggest looking elsewhere.
