About this listen
2018 Audie Award Finalist for Multi-Voiced Performance
From Taylor Jenkins Reid, "a genius when it comes to stories about life and love" (Redbook), comes an unforgettable and sweeping novel about one classic film actress' relentless rise to the top - the risks she took, the loves she lost, and the long-held secrets the public could never imagine.
Aging and reclusive Hollywood movie icon Evelyn Hugo is finally ready to tell the truth about her glamorous and scandalous life. But when she chooses unknown magazine reporter Monique Grant for the job, no one in the journalism community is more astounded than Monique herself. Why her? Why now?
Monique is not exactly on top of the world. Her husband, David, has left her, and her career has stagnated. Regardless of why Evelyn has chosen her to write her biography, Monique is determined to use this opportunity to jump-start her career.
Summoned to Evelyn's Upper East Side apartment, Monique listens as Evelyn unfurls her story: from making her way to Los Angeles in the 1950s to her decision to leave show business in the late '80s and, of course, the seven husbands along the way. As Evelyn's life unfolds - revealing a ruthless ambition, an unexpected friendship, and a great forbidden love - Monique begins to feel a very a real connection to the actress. But as Evelyn's story catches up with the present, it becomes clear that her life intersects with Monique's own in tragic and irreversible ways.
Written with Reid's signature talent for "creating complex, likable characters" (Real Simple), this is a fascinating journey through the splendor of Old Hollywood into the harsh realities of the present day as two women struggle with what it means - and what it takes - to face the truth.

One of my favorite novels of all time
As a reader who mainly veers towards non-fiction, this novel was not my usual selection.
I was shocked by how gripping the story was, and found myself daydreaming about the characters during work, choosing to read at unusual hours instead of my other favorite hobbies.
I particularly like that the story is based on the life of Elizabeth Taylor and found the mix of fiction and non fiction bewitching.
10/10 would recommend this book to any reader

Fantastic!
I loved listening to this book. The narrators voices are nice to listen to and the story is great. Strong feminist themes, and it all felt very true and believable. It's fun listening to the life of a celebrity. This book was recommended to me and I would recommend it to others.

Great listen!
I thoroughly enjoyed this book! The captivating story had me completely engrossed, and I found myself eagerly listening not only during my commute to work but also during walks, at home, and even during my workouts. Contrary to some negative reviews, I personally didn't find the ending to be disappointing. Overall, I am delighted with my choice and would highly recommend it!

Loved it
The only thing i would say is that one of the narrators, as good as she was, had this adenoidal quality to her voice that was distracting…while hearing her I felt she needed to swallow an accumulation of spit!😅 not exactly my greatest literary critique but it had to be said.
