Even a blind squirrel sometimes finds a nut

This book follows the pattern of Dan Brown's Robert Landon novels: Investigator follows trail of misleading clues and uncovers a conspiracy. While an exciting read, I was bothered by too many cliches: The protagonist just happens to have a mysterious connection to the villain. The client and investigator are of very different social classes, yet form an emotional bond, while distrusting each other throughout the novel. Important clues are known to many characters, but never revealed to the investigator, or to the reader.
Everyone knows and trusts everyone else, except for the investigator and the people trying to kill him.
There is a deus-ex-machina out of left field climax. Justice, in the end, is not served.
Though the novel is set in Restoration England, many of the thoughts, actions, and opinions of the characters seem decidedly out-of-period.
The plague tropes seemed like the Zombie Apocalypse. I don't know if that's at all realistic.
There are far too many coincidences.
