I've never been a good bet.
I wear my emotions on my tattoo-covered sleeve, I say all the wrong things, and I revel in pissing off a certain redhead far more than I should. In other words, I'm the last person the court would choose to parent any child, let alone three of them.
Yet being their father is all I want.
So when the woman I love to hate offers to help make all my dreams come true, I jump at the chance. Marrying Ava is a convenient solution: she's my kids' favorite person and the court will absolutely approve of the woman who runs the biggest charity in Boston.
But there is nothing convenient about the way I feel when she fights with me, or when we kiss. And I'm not sure which I enjoy more.
This marriage may have a time limit but I'm beginning to think I'd like to keep my wife. She'll probably fight me on it, but as they say, all's fair in love and war.

THE GOOD:
MMC Tyler Warren is hot Hot HOT! This man’s possessive streak had me salivating. Never in my wildest dreams would I have expected a d*** tattoo to be a turn on for me, but I think this book may have unlocked a new k!nk. Tyler is in it for the long haul and has no qualms about tattooing references to his wife on various parts of his body.
While Tyler seems like a tough guy grump, he has such a soft and caring interior. He wants nothing more than to be a dad to the foster children in his life and is willing to do whatever it takes to give them the home and the family they deserve.
THE NOT SO GOOD:
I found the start of the book and the initial timeline to be confusing and it took me a little bit to get situated between past and present. I think the whole “Text Messages From Ava’s and Tyler’s Phones” only added to my initial confusion. These ‘chapters’ (idk what to call them) appeared throughout the book and felt really random since they weren’t presented within the context of the story itself, but just sort of dumped together.
Tyler and Ava’s story was supposed to be one of enemies to lovers, but it felt more like they just had a h@te s*x k!nk. I never felt like their relationship truly progressed to one that would be mature, trusting, and secure - which is what it needed to be with 3 children in the picture.
The ways that Ava tried to make Tyler jealous while refusing to have a conversation with him about the “contract” were immature. Overall, I think she had a lot of unmanaged trauma and really needed to see a therapist. I found the entire premise of her literally being conceived to save her sister’s life and then growing up as a second class citizen in her family - literally existing to serve her sister and being put through countless medical procedures that left physical scars - to be really messed up.
This leads me to the whole texting her sister thing. I could tell early on how that was going to turn out. This is my third or fourth time encountering this sort of plot twist and once was enough for me. It feels so predictable. More than that, the way Ava handled the fall out of her ex hacking her phone really pissed me off. She went from saying she would do anything to be Josie’s mom to peacing TF out at the sign of one potential challenge (I don’t feel like it needed to be made as big of a deal as it was either).
Even though it’s the typical length of audiobook I’m used to, this book felt really long. It dragged at certain points and I found myself bored more than once.
Even the spice couldn’t keep me invested because it really wasn’t my jam. There is a pretty lengthy chapter involving her *back door* and I really don’t enjoy when spicy scenes seem like they are just a progression toward that kind of activity with the MMC’s inner monologue and dialogue leaning heavily into this.
I also wish the story stuck with the adopted kids/found family and didn’t end with a pregnancy when Ava was originally very adamant about not wanting biological children. For me, her ending up pregnant took away from the message that a family can be whatever you make it and doesn’t have to fit certain societal norms.
The narration by Connor and Angelina is well done. We get to hear Connor speak French on multiple occasions throughout the book since MMC Tyler is French Canadian *swoon*
