The scion of an old-money San Francisco family, Daniel Brasher left his well-paying, respectable money-manager position to marry his community organizer wife and work at a job he loves, leading group counseling sessions with recently paroled violent offenders. Story
The tragic story of Susan Powell and her murdered boys, Charlie and Braden, is the only case that rivals the Jon Benet Ramsey saga in the annals of true crime. When the pretty, blonde Utah mother went missing in December of 2009 the media was swept up in the story - with lenses and microphones trained on Susan's husband, Josh. He said he had no idea what happened to his young wife, and that he and the boys had been camping in the middle of a snowstorm.

Publisher's Summary
Mike Wingate, abandoned by his father at four and raised in foster care, is finally living the life he always dreamed of - he's happily married with a precocious 8-year-old daughter, and his construction company is about to finish a "green" housing development that will secure a solid future for them all. But then something from his own past, a past he doesn't even remember, comes back to visit terror upon him and his family.
Shady characters begin threatening Mike, and when he reports them, the police seem more interested in Mike's murky past than in protecting him. Now, with Mike, his wife Annabel and daughter Kat suddenly under attack from all sides, Mike turns to Shep, a dangerous man - and Mike's only true friend - from his childhood days in foster care. Together they will do whatever it takes to protect Mike's family against the hidden men behind the terrifying warning, "You're Next."
What the critics say
"Excellent...keeps Mike (and the reader) on edge, wondering what is happening to him and how far it will escalate. Highly recommended to Hurwitz’s many faithful readers and to fans of Linwood Barclay, Harlen Coben, and Lisa Gardner." --Booklist
"The bad guys are suitably evil and the mystery satisfying, but Hurwitz’s real success is depicting Mike’s hard-won life as a husband, father, and successful businessman. A first-rate thriller!" --Library Journal (starred review)
"Hurwitz masterfully provokes feelings of extreme dread...Shep and Mike fight and sleuth their way through intensifying mayhem until they find the unexpected answer...." --Publishers Weekly

Could not get past chapter 36
Would you try another book from Gregg Hurwitz and/or Scott Brick?
Not in the near future. The other reviews were so great so I felt it would have been at least a decent listen.
What could Gregg Hurwitz have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
I could not get past the 8 yr old daughter that spoke like a mature woman. Not her voice, but the words she actually said. What she said and the questions she asked were so unrealistic for an 8 yr old. Even a mature 8 yr old. I literally turned the story off at one point and could not get back to it. A story where someone is getting hunted down by powerful people is nothing new. The characters did stupid thing after stupid thing. I kept waiting for something interesting or smart to happen.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
Performance was fine.

Edge of my seat.
This was an Audible recommendation based on my previous selections, and after reading the summary, I thought it sounded promising. It certainly delivered on that promise with a tense thriller, well developed characters and a spot on reading by Scott Brick. Brick was consistently good throughout the entire story, but especially great with his voicing of hearing impaired Shep, the friend coming to repay a childhood debt. What a terrific character he is. The danger appears insurmountable, especially as the family has no idea what has brought it into their lives, but their committment to each other is what keeps them going. The story is well paced and plays fair by providing surprising twists without making them so preposterous that belief cannot be suspended. I sacrificed sleep by not being able to turn it off at the end of the day, needing to find out what came next. This author is new to me, but I am now looking at what else he has written. I hope other selections are as good as this one.

unable to enjoy
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
I have no Idea. It was a strain for me to comtinue made it through 10 chapters,
Has You're Next turned you off from other books in this genre?
I guess so. The commentator was boring, and no expression in his voice. Slow monotone
What didn’t you like about Scott Brick’s performance?
I was not impressed. Wore me out listening to him. Too slow, and no character to his voice
You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

The main character theoretically toughened by a hard childhood is completely self pitying and unable to control his emotions. This is made worse by the tone of the narrator. Listening longer just increased my displeasure and I quit about half way through

surprisingly disappointing
I was surprised at how disappointing the storyline and characters in this 4 to 5 star reviewer-rated book are.
The author drug out predictable outcomes throughout the book with tedious, long-winded, mind numbing descriptions as if.the reader could not come to any conclusions without it being spoon fed to them as if they were a child. The big reveal... why the bad guys are trying to kill the good guy...isnt answered until more than 40 chapters into the book. so...you spend 90% of the book as the main character runs for his life with no idea why...no idea at all because the author doesnt give you any hint of what is going on other than the "you're next" warnings received by the main character. I thought the whole thing was so contrived, predictable and absurd that I finished the book angry that I had wasted a valuable credit.

Very Dissapointed
I bought this book because I listened to another book (Orphan X) by this author. I loved Orphan X. This book was awful. It was way too long, too repetitive. Plot was not even partially believable. I got sick of the repetitiveness of the main family characters. Could have used more of Shep. It was one of those books that was so bad I kept going back to it in hopes something would develop but it did not. The reader was very good.
