Publisher's Summary
太宰の代表作の一つ『斜陽』は、終戦後、GHQの農地改革によって大地主だった津軽の実家の津島家が没落したことを間近に見て、チェーホフの『桜の園』と同じではないかと感じたことがその執筆のきっかけだと言われている。そして、同じく没落階級の一人だった知人の太田静子が戦後に日記を克明につけていることを知り、その借り受けた日記から構想を得て、昭和22年（1947年）2月から、伊豆三津浜の旅館で書き始められた。 静子の日記をかなり使っており、執筆中に太田静子が太宰の子（後の作家・太田治子）を妊娠したことを告げられたことなどが、作品内容に色濃く投影されている感がある。 女主人公かず子は、家が戦後没落したため、老母とともに東京西片町から伊豆に移る。やがて戦地から弟の直治が復員してきたものの、金を持ち出し東京の小説家上原のもとで麻薬中毒で自堕落な生活を送っている。夫がいたものの、惹かれる上原を訪ねて上京し妊娠。それがもとで離婚し、直治は自分を責める。母が結核で亡くなり、かず子は「戦闘開始」。 再び上京して上原と再会していたその朝、直治は遺書を残して自殺していた・・・。
