  • E240 - 5 Podcasting Guidelines to Follow, What to Embrace, Enhance & Prioritize NPR's Podcast StartUp Guide
    Apr 24 2024

Episode 240 - 5 Podcasting Guidelines to Follow, What to Embrace, Enhance & Prioritize NPR's Podcast StartUp Guide

    Five Rules to podcast by

1 - Be Authentic - If listeners can hear your authenticity, they’ll join in with it.

2 - Prepare - Winging it is not an option, not if you want people to care about what you’re saying.

3 - Leave Room for Discovery - Yes, prepare, but always be open to twists in the road, to reach for insights.

4 - Be Yourself, but better - The version of you on your podcast is a distillation of you. A you that’s sharper. Funnier, probably. Maybe even smarter. Certainly pithier.

5 - Edit - This is the most important rule. It’s a way of focusing your discussion, an opportunity to identify what makes your podcast unique. Do not shirk this.

The Book: NPR's Podcast Start Up Guide: Create, Launch, and Grow a Podcast on Any BudgetFrom NPR comes the definitive guide to podcasting - featuring step-by-step advice on how to find a unique topic, tell the best stories, and engage the most listeners, as well as the secrets that will take your pod to the next level.Whoever you are, whatever you love, there’s a podcast audience waiting for you, and in today’s booming audio storytelling landscape, it’s never been easier to share your voice with the world. But while the barrier to entry for podcast production is relatively low (just the cost of a mic and a laptop), the learning curve is steep - and quality matters. That’s where NPR comes in.

In NPR’s Podcast Start Up Guide, Glen Weldon draws on NPR’s extensive educational materials and army of talent - from recognizable hosts, such as Guy Raz (How I Built This), Gene Demby (Code Switch), Linda Holmes (Pop Culture Happy Hour), and Yowei Shaw (Invisibilia), to indispensable behind-the-scenes players, such as producers, engineers, and editors - to guide aspiring podcasters through the conception, creation, and launch of a podcast.

Part master class, part candid informational interview with the best in the business, this book is a must-have for anyone who wants to make their dream of starting a podcast a reality.

Daily Dave Briefing - Podcasting Tips - Should I have Chapters in your Podcast Episode Notes

Unlocking the Power of Podcast Chapters: Enhancing the Listener Experience

When a podcast incorporates chapters, listeners can see the chapter titles in their podcast player and easily skip to the section they want to hear. This provides a two-fold benefit: listeners can find a starting point that aligns with their unique interests, and they gain a bird's-eye view of the podcast's overall structure.

Should You Add Chapters to Your Podcast?Chapters may not be appropriate for all podcast genres, such as storytelling shows like Snap Judgment or The Moth, where the narrative is meant to be experienced from start to finish.

However, for informational podcasts like The Huberman Lab or less structured shows like the Joe Rogan Experience, chapters can be a valuable tool to highlight the "key segments" and provide a roadmap for listeners. As a podcaster, you'll have an intuitive understanding of whether chapters would be a good fit for your content.

To get a sense of how chapters "feel," try using a podcast player like Fathom, which can read existing chapter markers or even generate them using AI for podcasts that don't have them. Observing how chapters are used in YouTube videos can also provide helpful insights.

    Streamlining the Chapter Creation Process

Adding chapters manually can be a time-consuming task, requiring you to listen back to your podcast and meticulously place markers or type up the chapter titles.

Some podcast hosting platforms, like Buzzsprout, offer built-in tools to simplify this process.

However, the chapter creation process can be one of the most arduous parts of podcast production, with some producers listening to their episodes multiple times just to identify the necessary elements, such as chapter markers, social media clips, and audio quality checks.

Leveraging AI Tools for Effortless Chapter GenerationTo address this challenge, many podcasters are turning to AI tools like Podium, which can automate the chapter creation process. These tools listen to your podcast, transcribe the audio, and then analyze the transcript to identify the appropriate chapter segments. The result is a formatted output that you can easily add to your show notes, allowing platforms like YouTube and Spotify to display the chapter titles.

This AI-powered approach can save you hours of manual work, freeing up your time to focus on other aspects of podcast production. While some may be hesitant to rely on AI, the goal is not to replace your role, but rather to provide a solid foundation that you can then refine and perfect.

    Conclusion

Chapters can be a powerful tool for enhancing the listener experience, but creating them can be a time-consuming task. By leveraging AI-driven chapter generation tools, you can streamline the process and devote more attention to the creative and strategic elements of your podcast. Whether you're a solo podcaster or part of a production team, these AI-powered solutions can be a game-changer in your podcast workflow. ___ https://howtopodcast.ca/

  • E239 - 3 Questions For A New Podcaster - Why Are You Thinking of Starting A Podcast
    Apr 22 2024

Episode 239 - 3 Questions For A New Podcaster - Why Are You Thinking of Starting A Podcast

So, why are you thinking of doing a podcast? Here's an exercise for you to consider

Please answer these three questions about your podcast plans:

    (1) How much time do you have to devote to your podcast?

If time is your smallest slice of your pie, maybe you can try publishing shorter epsiodes or less frequent episodes, maybe you can partner with a co-host and share responsibilites and the time requied to create and maintain your podcast

    (2) How much money do you have to devote to your podcast?

If money is your smallest slice of your pie, having a co-host could mean splitting costs, you could use a crowdfunding tool like BuyMeACoffee.com to raise capital funds to run your show - there are ways to make your money slice of your pie bigger!

    (3) How much passion do you have to do this podcast?

Why should you or your listener care about your podcast? Do you love your subject? Doing something that you are by no means passionate about is not sustainable - at all! Identify what your passions are - these are the things that will drive you!

If you are not clear on your investment of time, money and passion your audience will pick up on this!

Need help developing time, money and passion for your podcast? Use the calendar link on my site and let's discuss how you move forward with your podcast!

    We got you!

  • E238 - How my YouTube Strategy Differs from other creators - How I made YouTube work for me, not the other way around
    Apr 19 2024

Episode 238 - How my YouTube Strategy Differs from other creators - How I made YouTube work for me, not the other way around

An Audio only podcast does have a home on YouTube despite the constant railings of "gurus" that preach to podcasters that (in their words) "Fake videos do not belong on YouTube" To these "gurus", a fake video is anything that is not a video.

What is your YouTube strategy for your podcast? Do you have a strategy? Mine differs from others in this space based on one simple statement - I do not work for YouTube, YouTube works for me!

YouTube is great for your podcast as a backup drive, as a legacy for your content, the ease of connection is simple, searchability is strong to be found, accessibility is ever present with closed captioning and transcripts for free and non-video versions of an audio cast will work for many including marathon true crime podcasters - you don't need to make a movie of your episodes - you have a space on YouTube for your audio only content.

If you come across anyone in podcasting that tells you that a free platform should never be trusted because free is a bad business plan - then kindly ask them if they have a Facebook account, or Instagram, or LinkedIn or TikTok - those are all free plans and seem to do suprisingly well as a free platform.

    What is your YouTube strategy?
