Ein Schuss in Liliane de Vry‘s Villa. Kurze Zeit später ist Inspektor Hawthorne auch schon vor Ort. Er findet die Leiche eines Mannes im Salon der schönen Liliane, während diese mit ihrem Geliebten zum Tatzeitpunkt selbst die oberen Räumlichkeiten bewohnt haben soll. Auf der Suche nach dem geheimnisvollen Mörder wendet sich Inspektor Hawthorne an Sherlock Holmes und Dr. Watson.

Ein unbekannter Mann mit rotem Schopf bietet der schönen, aber mittellosen Ellen Delmoreit einhundert Pfund für eine neue Arbeitsstelle auf Schloss Cardiff. Überrascht willigt Ellen Delmoreit ein und macht sich sogleich am nächsten Tag auf nach Schloss Cardiff. Doch das angebliche Schloss entpuppt sich als eine unbewohnte Ruine. Dann aber entdeckt die schöne, junge Frau einen alten Mann. Dieser beginnt hysterisch nach seinen Leibwächtern zu schreien. Die ankommenden Männer überwältigen Lady Delmoreit und drohen ihr mit der abscheulichsten Grausamkeit. Ellen Delmoreit flüchtet sich in eine Ohnmacht.

Sherlock Holmes und Dr. Watson werden per Telegramm nach Monte Carlo beordert. Frederic Woodville bittet Holmes eindringlich um dessen Hilfe, da ihm jemand nach dem Leben trachtet. Noch während der Anreise erreicht Holmes ein weiteres Telegramm von Woodville´s Geliebter, dass ihn über den Tod Frederic Woodville´s in Kenntnis setzt. Doch wie wurde der heimtückische Mord begangen? Waren doch alle Türen des Hotelzimmers fest von innen verschlossen, als das Opfer von hinten erstochen wurde.

Eine Depesche erreicht Sherlock Holmes und Dr. Watson. Henry Norton, der Verbrecherkönig, soll noch heute Nacht bei Ralph Sidney in Poplar einbrechen und ihn morden. Schleunigst machen sich die zwei Männer auf nach Poplar. Doch sie kommen zu spät. Von dem Verbrecherkönig keine Spur. Einzig, eine kopflose Leiche liegt in Ralph Sidneys Wohnung.

Lady Diana Canbury ist mit ihrer Equipage auf dem Weg zum Ball des Herzogs. An einer Kreuzung kommt ihre Kutsche zum Stehen, als plötzlich der Verschlag aufgerissen wird und ein bewaffneter Räuber zu ihr in die Kutsche springt. Mit einer schnellen Bewegung greift er der Lady an die Brust und reißt ihr die Brosche mit dem überaus wertvollen, gelben Kanarien – Brillanten vom Kleid. Die Lady fällt in Ohnmacht, der Räuber entflieht in die Nacht.

Bei Scotland Yard ist ein Kollege der französischen Polizei zu Gast: Dr. Bertillon stellt sein modernes biometrisches Erfassungssystem vor. Schon bald kommt die kriminaltechnische Neuerung auch Sherlock Holmes und Dr. Watson in die Quere.

Sherlock Holmes verfolgt einen verdächtigen Krüppel und deckt nach und nach die düstere Vergangenheit des toten Colonel auf.

In King's Pyland, gelegen im dünn besiedelten Dartmoor, wird der berühmte Pferde-Trainer John Straker ermordet, und sein Pferd, das als schnellstes Englands gilt, bleibt verschwunden. Sherlock Holmes und Dr. Watson treffen bei der Spurensuche auf Silas Brown, den Widersacher Strakers. Ist er Mörder und Pferdeentführer in einer Person?

(August 1893) Holmes und Watson bekommen Besuch von Dr. Percy Trewelyan, einem jungen Facharzt für Nervenkrankheiten. Bevor er seine Geschichte erzählt, schildert er seinen Werdegang: Glorreiche Universitätskarriere, aber zu arm, um eine respektable Fachpraxis einzurichten. Eines Tages tauchte ein Mr. Blessington auf, der ihm ein lukratives Angebot machte: Übernahme aller Kosten gegen einen Anteil vom Gewinn der Praxis. Trewelyan willigte ein; beide Männer lebten fortan in einem Haus und Blessington wurde sein Dauerpatient.

Der Angestellte des Börsenmaklers (The Stockbroker's Clerk) erschien erstmals im März 1893 im Strand Magazine und wurde ein Jahr später mit 10 anderen Fällen in Die Memoiren des Sherlock Holmes veröffentlicht. Nach monatelanger Arbeitslosigkeit erhält Hall Pycroft gleich zwei Jobangebote an einem Tag - eines verlockender als das andere. Als ihm klar wird, dass es dabei nicht mit rechten Dingen zugegangen ist, wendet er sich an Sherlock Holmes.

Die Junker von Reigate (The Reigate Puzzle) erschien erstmals im Juni 1893 im Strand Magazine und wurde ein Jahr später mit 10 anderen Fällen in Die Memoiren des Sherlock Holmes veröffentlicht. Holmes befindet sich nach einem Schwächeanfall zur Erholung in der Grafschaft Reigate. Doch der Einbruch bei einem der Gutsherren weckt sein Interesse und gegen Dr. Watsons ärztlichen Rat beschäftigt er sich mit dem Fall. Merkwürdig ist, dass nichts Wertvolles gestohlen wurde, sondern nur zwei versilberte Kerzenhalter, ein elfenbeinerner Briefbeschwerer, ein kleines Barometer und ein Knäuel Bindfaden.
