George Washington's Rules of Civility and Decent Behavior in Company and Conversation is a set of 110 precepts or maxims on such matters as how to dress, how to walk, how to eat in public, and how to behave correctly in the company of superiors and equals. While containing the clear guidance in propriety, the rules also address moral issues, albeit somewhat indirectly. The rules are based on a set of precepts found in a treatise “Bienseance de la Conversation” prepared by Jesuit instructors in the 16th century.

Most of the rules have been traced to a French etiquette manual written in 1595, titled "Bienséance de la conversation entre les hommes". As a handwriting exercise circa 1745, Washington copied Francis Hawkins' translation which was published in England around 1640.

In 1790, Moses Seixas of the Touro Synagogue wrote a letter to President Washington. Representing a people who had been escaping persecution for generations, he wanted confirmation that Jews would be given full freedom in the United States. Washington assured Seixas, and those of all religions. This letter provides insight into two founding principles of America: freedom of religion and separation of church and state.

Washington managed to get a ragtag army into fighting form, leading them to victory against all odds. After 20 years in public service, George Washington turned down a third term as president with this memorable farewell address. Originally this was a 32-page document that was read and distributed widely throughout America after its initial publication, and it deserves the same avid listenership today.

George Washington's Masonic Correspondence as Found Among the Washington Papers in the Library of Congress allows for an insight of the great esteem in which the first President held Freemasonry. Since his early days, Washington had been an honored member of the fraternity, formerly established in England in 1717. This work groups the material together in chronological order, and shows the surroundings and conditions under which the correspondence was made.
