Jerome Klapka Jerome (1859-1927) was an English writer and humourist. The Cost of Kindness is an ironic tale about a congregation desperate to see the back of their cantankerous and highly unpopular vicar. Fortunately the dreadful man has agreed to leave and is preparing a vituperative final sermon admonishing his ungrateful flock for ousting him. But then the churchwarden's wife decides it would be only Christian to show the horrid man some sympathy....

Over 100 years since it was first published Idle Thoughts of an Idle Fellow addresses subjects which are still relevant today – perhaps more so! Being hard up, being in the blues and being in love are just some aspects of the human condition on which Jerome K. Jerome reflects in his unique whimsical fashion. De tre vännerna skall tillbringa en kortare semester på Themsen. Vi får följa huvudpersonerna och deras hund genom en lång rad dråpliga situationer. Boken må vara skriven på 1800 talet men ger oss anledningar att konstatera att det aldrig blir omodernt att skoja om tillkortakommanden i det dagliga livet. Ett rejält magplask i floden ÄR roligt även om det är över hundra år gammalt.

Jerome, George and Harris are three hypochondriacal friends who like to spend time comparing their illnesses, although none of them is ill. One day they decide to go on a vacation by sailing down the Thames river towards Oxford. The three friends prepare a long list of things they will need and even take the dog Montmorency with them. During the journey they visit many different places and fall into various and interesting situations.

There are four of them - George, Harris, the writer himself and that dog, Montmorency - all participants in a boating expedition on the Thames. The difficulties and vicissitudes heaped upon these innocents develop to epic proportions as they experience the hazards of the great English waterway. Their problems are in no way diminished by the outrageous behaviour of Montmorency, who lays waste several riverside communities in the course of their journey.

Three Men in a Boat (To Say Nothing of the Dog), published in 1889, is a humorous account by Jerome K. Jerome of a boating holiday on the Thames between Kingston and Oxford. The book was intended initially to be a serious travel guide, with accounts of local history of places along the route, but the humorous elements eventually took over, to the point where the serious and somewhat sentimental passages now seem like an unnecessary distraction to the essentially comic novel.
