Saadat Hasan Manto was a Pakistani playwright and author considered among the greatest writers of short stories in South Asian history. Presented here is a selection from his writings.

Aab-e-Gum is one of the most fascinting books in Urdu on human behaviors, humor and satire with a tinge of sadness. The story follows Basharat and his adventures in Pakistan. He is regarded as one of the best humorists in Urdu. His writing has a distinctive diction laced with language reminiscent of Amir Khusro in its use of words and construction. He was associated with several governmental services including Radio Pakistan, Ministry of Culture, and National Book Centre of Paksitan.

Ghulam Abbas was a short story writer. He was born in Amritsar, India, and died in 1982 in Karachi, Sindh, Pakistan.This collection includes the following short stories: "Aanandi", "Burda-Faroosh", "Over Coat".

The theme of this collection of stories is the Indian culture of that time, narrated through 18th-century Delhi. The 18th century has probably been the most controversial in India's history of the last thousand years. According to the historiography that makes up the consciousness of modern India, it was an age of decadence and arrogance. In contrast, Shamsur Rahman Faruqi depicts in detail that Indian society was presenting the most developed view of a mixed Hindu-Muslim tradition.

About the author: Krishan Chander (1914-1977) was an Urdu/Hindi writer of short stories and novels. He was a prolific writer, penning over 20 novels, 30 collections of short stories and scores of radio plays in Urdu and later, after partition of the country, took to writing mainly in Hindi. He also wrote screen-plays for Bollywood movies to supplement his meagre income as an author of satirical stories. Krishan Chander's novels have been translated into over 16 Indian languages and some foreign languages, including English.

The world's first and longest magical fantasy HOSHRUBA (1883-1893) was compiled in the Urdu language in Lucknow by two of its greatest story-tellers, Syed Muhammad Husain Jah and Ahmed Husain Qamar, wrote a fantasy in the Urdu language whose equal had not been heard before, and which has never been rivaled since. It was called Tilism-e Hoshruba. The writers claimed that the tale had been passed down to them from storytellers going back centuries: It was a part of the beloved oral epic, The Adventures of Amir Hamza which had come to the Indian subcontinent via Persia.

Asad Muhammad Khan was born in Bhopal, India, in 1932. He now lives in Karachi, has written a number of television plays, and published five collections of short stories to date. This collection includes the following stories: "Narbada", "Dastaan Sarae", "Shehr Koofay Ka Mehez Aik Aadmi", and "Toofaan Ke Markaz Me".

Saadat Hasan Manto was a Pakistani writer, playwright, and author considered among the greatest writers of short stories in South Asian history. Siyah Hashiye is a collection of short stories related to the partion of Pakistan and India.

Rajinder Singh Bedi (1 September 1915-1984) was an Indian Urdu writer of the progressive writers' movement and a playwright, who later worked in Hindi cinema as a film director, screenwriter and dialogue writer. Bedi is considered one of the leading 20th century progressive writers of Urdu fiction, and one of the most prominent Urdu fiction writers. He is most known for "disturbing" Partition of India tales. This collection includes the following: "Garam Coat"; "Lajwanti"; and "Sirf Ek Cigarette."
