Ahmed Faraz is considered one of the greatest modern Urdu poets of the last century. Essentially a romantic poet, steeped in classical Persian and Urdu traditions, he combined the sensitivity and lyricism of the great Urdu poet Meer Taqi Meer and the philosophical range and depth of Mirza Ghalib, his poetry also reflected a progressive outlook. He is often compared to Faiz Ahmed Faiz for his simple style of writing because of which he became popular among common readers and connoisseurs of urdu poetry.

इक्कीसवीं सदी में पाकिस्तान में कैसी ग़ज़लें कही जा रही हैं, इसका अंदाज़ा आप इस किताब से लगा सकते हैं। यूँ तो पाकिस्तान में बेशुमार शायर हैं और उनमें से कुछेक को ही इस किताब के लिए चुनना एक चुनौती थी। तो चुनाव का पैमाना यह रखा गया कि शायर ऐसे हों जिनकी ग़ज़लों को हिन्दी के पाठक समझ सकें और उनसे हिन्दुस्तान के लोग कुछ हद तक वाकिफ़ हों। इस पैमाने पर सात शायर ही खरे उतरे और उन सात शायरों की चुनिंदा ग़ज़लें इस किताब में पेश हैं।

Sahir Ludhianvi can be called the poet with a “social conscience” as is evident from his poetry in which social concerns are often the dominant themes. Through his poetry he lamented the decline of morality in society, discrimination against women, futility of war, and attacked the rise of the self-appointed custodians of religion and power-hungry politicians. Born into a Muslim family on March 8, 1921, his real name was Abdul Hayee and Sahir Ludhianvi was his pen name. Sahir's childhood was marked by the separation of his parents and the unfair treatment of his mother.
