Tired of the pace and noise of life near London and longing for a better place to raise their young children, Mary J. MacLeod and her husband, George, encountered their dream while vacationing on a remote island in the Scottish Hebrides. Enthralled by its windswept beauty, they soon were the proud and startled owners of a near-derelict croft house - a farmer’s stone cottage - on “a small acre” of land. Mary assumed duties as the island’s district nurse.

Description
An Irish Country Doctor from bestselling author Patick Taylor is a charming and engrossing tale that will captivate listeners from the very first word—and leave them yearning to visit the Irish countryside of days gone by.
Barry Laverty, M.B., can barely find the village of Ballybucklebo on a map when he first sets out to seek gainful employment there, but already he knows that there is nowhere he would rather live than in the emerald hills and dales of Northern Ireland. The proud owner of a spanking-new medical degree and little else in the way of worldly possessions, Barry jumps at the chance to secure a position as an assistant in a small rural practice.
At least until he meets Dr. Fingal Flahertie O'Reilly.
The older physician, whose motto is to never let the patients get the upper hand, has his own way of doing things. At first, Barry can't decide if the pugnacious O'Reilly is the biggest charlatan he has ever met, or the best teacher he could ever hope for. Through O'Reilly Barry soon gets to know all of the village's colorful and endearing residents, including:
A malingering Major and his equally hypochondriacal wife;
An unwed servant girl, who refuses to divulge the father of her upcoming baby;
A slightly daft old couple unable to marry for lack of a roof;
And a host of other eccentric characters who make every day an education for the inexperienced young doctor.
Ballybucklebo is long way from Belfast, and Barry is quick to discover that he still has a lot to learn about the quirks and traditions of country life. But with pluck and compassion and only the slightest touch of blarney, he will find out more about life—and love—than he ever imagined back in medical school.
Ce que les critiques en disent
“Narrator John Keating has a field day with the humor, long-winded stories, and colorful accents...[Keating] skillfully presents the unique and sometimes-hilarious Irish take on joy, sorrow, illness, and death.” —AudioFile
“Welcome to the colorful Northern Ireland community of Ballybucklebo where there's always something brewing beneath the Village's deceptively sleepy surface. Fans of Karon's Mitford series will enjoy this.” —Smoky Mountain Sentinel

A delightful, charming book
I had already read this book. However, as I recently picked up the audiobook for a second read-through, I thought that it was time for me to review this story.
Like the title suggests, “An Irish Country Doctor” takes place in the Emerald Isle (Ballybucklebo to be exact), and follows the experiences of newly graduated Doctor Barry Laverty as he becomes acquainted with general practice in a small village.
Unsurprisingly, I enjoyed this novel as much as I did during my first readthrough. While “An Irish Country Doctor” may not be a challenging read, the small, quirky village with its cast of characters make for a cozy story to curl up on the couch with.
In terms of the audiobook edition, John Keating was a perfect narrator; bringing life to the loveable characters of Ballybucklebo.
Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed my time reading this book, and I can’t wait to read the next installments.

Not for me
I didn't like this book. The humour might appeal to some but not me. I really didn't like the swearing by the old doctor. I didn't finish the book for that reason.

I wasn't bad but...
... this book and even more this series, is not for me.
I listened to the book until the end, but a lot of times, I felt a little bored. Probably because I have lived in a big city all my life, I don't really enjoy tales about small villages and everybody knowing everything about everyone else.
The narrator was very good.
It was not bad, it's just not for me.

Near plagiarism of James Harriet
So similar to James Harriet I’m rolling my eyes.
The head doctor, the Labrador, and all other aspects are so similar to J. Harriet that this book is boring. I couldn’t finish.
The narration is also not exceptional.
