Histoire
For generations, the solar system - Mars, the Moon, the Asteroid Belt - was humanity's great frontier. Until now. The alien artifact working through its program under the clouds of Venus has appeared in Uranus's orbit, where it has built a massive gate that leads to a starless dark. Jim Holden and the crew of the Rocinante are part of a vast flotilla of scientific and military ships going out to examine the artifact. But behind the scenes, a complex plot is unfolding, with the destruction of Holden at its core.

The fourth book in the NYT best-selling Expanse series, Cibola Burn sees the crew of the Rocinante on a new frontier, as the rush to colonize the new planets threatens to outrun law and order and give way to war and chaos. Enter a new frontier. "An empty apartment, a missing family, that's creepy. But this is like finding a military base with no one on it. Fighters and tanks idling on the runway with no drivers. This is bad juju. Something wrong happened here. What you should do is tell everyone to leave".

A revolution brewing for generations has begun in fire. It will end in blood. The Free Navy - a violent group of Belters in black-market military ships - has crippled the Earth and begun a campaign of piracy and violence among the outer planets. The colony ships heading for the thousand new worlds on the far side of the alien ring gates are easy prey, and no single navy remains strong enough to protect them. James Holden and his crew know the strengths and weaknesses of this new force better than anyone.

Description
Hugo Award Winner for Best Series
The second book in the NYT best-selling Expanse series, Caliban's War shows a solar system on the brink of war, and the only hope of peace rests on James Holden and the crew of the Rocinante's shoulders. Now a Prime Original series.
We are not alone.
On Ganymede, breadbasket of the outer planets, a Martian marine watches as her platoon is slaughtered by a monstrous supersoldier. On Earth, a high-level politician struggles to prevent interplanetary war from reigniting. And on Venus, an alien protomolecule has overrun the planet, wreaking massive, mysterious changes and threatening to spread out into the solar system.
In the vast wilderness of space, James Holden and the crew of the Rocinante have been keeping the peace for the Outer Planets Alliance. When they agree to help a scientist search war-torn Ganymede for a missing child, the future of humanity rests on whether a single ship can prevent an alien invasion that may have already begun...

Perfect series to listen to
Not all books work well as audiobooks, but Corey's writing style works well in this format. I'm a big fan of the ScyFy/Amazon TV adaptation, but I did find that the show peaked in the first couple of seasons. Going through the books now, I've found that my few gripes with the plotlines in the show are precisely where it diverts from the source material. Where the plots get a little wacky, contrite and at times a hinder suspension of disbelief in the show, the books are more coherent. The TV adaptation is very good obviously, but perhaps unsurprisingly, the books are even better, and the gap between the two seems to widen as you get deeper into the series. If you're a fan of the show, don't think that knowing the outcomes will spoil the books - they don't. What becomes very clear is that the casting and art direction in the show is impeccable and for the most part is very true to the books' descriptions, so it's nice to have clear pictures in your mind of what the characters look like, the ships, etc. But the show has warped some of the plots to fit with the hamfisted messaging and worldviews that seem to be ubiquitous in big budget TV/movies on streaming platforms, and suffers for it - the books are more imaginative and nuanced in that regard.

The amazing saga continues
Like most people, I watched the TV series of The Expanse before starting the books. A lot of the show's events are in these books, but there is a great deal more character detail and nuanced lore presented in here than they could have been expected to put in the show. If you're someone who is invested in the universe, you should go through this series.
Jefferson Mays does a great job at narration, but unfortunately, like the first book, the authors are bad at conveying dialogue between multiple characters. At least to me, the constant "he said", "she said", "they replied" in conversations between two characters that are easily identified throughout, both in general and because of Mays' distinct delivery for each, really gets on my nerves. You don't need to point out each time someone says something, we hear them saying it. Even in written form, there are better ways to do this, but for the audiobook, I would really have liked that bloat to have been edited out, since Mays had a distinct voice and tone for each character, making it obvious who is speaking. This is going to be a nitpick for many, but it's what holds me back from a full 5 star rating.
I still have many books to go, but so far, I'm still hooked on this.

Better then the first book
This book has the same narrator as the first book so if you enjoyed the first narration then no change here. I think the narration is done well enough and just enough change to the voices of each of the characters to help you understand who is talking.
The story is amazing. I enjoyed the first one but overall thought it was okay. I liked it well enough to try this one and I'm glad I did. The second novel has me itching to listen to the rest. All the small issues I had with the first book when it came to the characters have been mostly done away with. Certain characters I didn't really care for in the first book, really come into their own in this one. The plot really hooked me and while it was a bit cliche "military wants to use unknown thing for military purposes and blows up in their face" it was written well enough to keep it engaging. I hope this writing continues and the next book gives us a more original plot line.

Great Book of Great Series
Really nice second book in the Expanse series. I found it just as good as book one. The story and characters continue to evolve as does the proto-molecule. There are a lot of characters in this novel and they are all fleshed out and dynamic. There is action and tension. The science is interesting and believable. The politics are interesting. This is rapidly becoming one of the best series in Sci Fi.
The narration is wonderful and adds to the characters and excitement of the novel.

1,000% better than the TV series
Glad it was the TV series I came across first, because now that I've listened to the book series on audible, watching the TV series just makes me want to kick its writers a$$es, for so needlessly departing from the character dynamics and details of the infinitely superior books.

Not my fav in the series, but very strong read
Corey isn't what I'd call an insightful writer. Don't expect to experience epiphanies. What he does really well is create admirable, somewhat complex characters you want to root for, despite their flaws. He does this without a whole lot of "inside their mind" sequences of reflection. It's very deftly done, way more show than tell.
And the settings, scenes, and tech are extremely well imagined. There is pretty much nowhere that you think, "No, it wouldn't be like that" or "That character has no reason to do that."
It's not soulfull writing, but it's smart writing with enough warmth and humanity to strongly engage... and is sometimes truly moving.
I'm pretty sure I'll read them all.
Corey knows his readers are not idiots who have to have everything way over-explained, which I also appreciate.
There are lots of places where I felt here comes a cliche in motivation or dialog, but Corey almost always catches these and breaks from the cliche at the last second. These moments are fun and often humorous, and increase my respect for his work. It's like he thinks, we all know what's supposed to happen at this moment, so I'm just going to have the character do/say this instead--gotcha! The characters seem more human that way, too, since real people are often surprising in lots of small ways.

Totally Hooked
Usually, watching 50 episodes of any series would leave me bored and looking for something new. Usually, one 19 hour series book would be sending me back to non-fiction. But I have become hopelessly addicted.
Thank goodness I am retired with plenty of free time for hiking, gardening and knitting as I listen. Thank God these books are neither immoral, illegal or fattening. 2020 & 2021 has been a sad and lonely time for me. Having The Expanse series to distract and entertain me has been wonderful.
Everything in these books is spot on. I have little patience for science fiction that does not get the science right. I hate shallow characters and bad dialogue. I love the plausibility and variety of the world depicted here. I love the characters, the politics, the biology and the ethics. The writing is outstanding, the narration brilliant, the content mesmerizing and the story gripping.
On to book 3! 🚀

rivets
maybe the top 2, Dune being 1. Highly believable near future- perfect match between my understanding of today' science and politics and a fantastic rendering of a future where Earth is crowded bloated and lazy and still seeking to dominate and exploit every resource and human it can, throughout our solar system. complete with disastrous consequences of human greed. can't say enough good about these books.

Even Better Than Leviathan Wakes.
Calibans War, does interplanetary politics right. It is not too heavy handed in its approach, making it appear to be more of a spectator sport rather then a game of bureaucratic checkers. The new characters are all well imagined and thought out. Bobbie is probably the most ordinary character, but in an immensely extraordinary situation. Christjen is far and away the most well developed and fleshed out character and it was a treat to see how she operated.
Protomolecule is still present and doing its thing, however we do finally get a glimpse at what it can do other aside from making primordial soup from people. While its presence is short, when it is shown it is a truly imaginative, alien and horrific entity. It has some cosmic level horror, driven home by a seemingly innocuous curiosity of humanity.
The narrator was on point as he had been in Leviathan Wakes, and really strives to differentiate the characters. He was truly a joy to listen to.

O.M.G!!!!!!
Jefferson Mays is THE MOST PERFECT reader of this series! I've watched every episode of "The Expanse" thus far, and it amazes me how perfectly translated the books are to the screen... the characters are a perfect casting of James S. A. Corey's vision! Bravo! Wow... just WOW!
