Histoire
Learn how to use the gift of pain with Pema Chödrön, a Buddhist nun in the Tibetan Vajrayana tradition. She teaches that it is in suffering where you will find the seeds of your awakening and that vulnerability is actually your greatest spiritual resource. You'll learn how to create your own spiritual retreat, the key teachings necessary for cultivating your own "soft spot" - the gateway to your own noble heart, the promise of the Four Limitless Ones, and the teachings on the Six Paramitas: the Buddha's own map of the journey to enlightenment. This program was recorded within the peaceful shrine room of Gampo Abbey, Chödrön's home on the cliffs of Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia.

Histoire
Life has a way of provoking us with traffic jams and computer malfunctions, with emotionally distant partners and crying children - and before we know it, we're upset. We feel terrible, and then we end up saying and doing things that only make matters worse. But it doesn't have to be that way, says Pema Chödrön. It is possible to relate constructively to the inevitable shocks, losses, and frustrations of life so that we can find true happiness. The key, Pema explains, is not biting the "hook" of our habitual responses.

On Getting Unstuck, Pema Chodron introduces a rare Tibetan teaching she received from her teacher, Dzigar Kontrul Rinpoche, and one that has become critical to her practice. Here, she unveils the mystery of an ineffable quality; a "pre-emotional" feeling that arises in us, brings us discomfort, and causes us to react by escaping the discomfort, often with harmful habits. With Getting Unstuck, she offers us a first look at "both the itch and the scratch": what Tibetan Buddhists call shenpa.

One of the best ways to bring meditation off the cushion and into everyday life is to practice lojong (or mind training). For centuries, Tibetans have used 59 powerful mind-training slogans as a way to transform life's ordinary situations into opportunities for awakening. In this audiobook program, Pema Chödrön presents her definitive teachings on lojong. She offers an overview of the practice and goes on to provide inspiring commentary on the slogans while paying special attention to how to apply them on the spot in our daily lives.

Histoire
Spiritual practice, Pema Chödrön teaches, has nothing to do with self-improvement, since, as the course's title claims, you're already perfect right now. The limitless qualities of loving-kindness, compassion, joy, and equanimity are your deep-down, ultimate reality, and those are qualities that can't be improved upon. If you're not feeling particularly kind, compassionate, joyful, or equanimous at the moment, take heart: the Four Limitless Ones are there like seeds, waiting to be cultivated through practice.

Tibetan Buddhism describes three gates that everyone must pass through on the road to spiritual liberation. With the Three Commitments, Pema Chodron brings her unique blend of insight and gentle instruction to guide practitioners through each of these thresholds as they seek the source of true happiness. As Pema explains, suffering arises when we resist the laws of impermenance-the fact that everything we know, including ourselves, will one day die.

In the words of the Buddha, the four foundations of mindfulness (the four satipatthana) are "the direct path for the purification of beings, for the surmounting of sorrow and lamentation, for the disappearance of dukkha (suffering) and discontent, for acquiring the true method, for the realization of Nibbana." Within the quintessential discourse called the Satipatthana Sutta, we find the Buddha's seminal teachings about the practice of meditation.

Pema Is A Hidden Treasure
Pema Chodron is a true hidden treasure living right here on Canada's East Coast. She brings the Buddhist teachings to life with her colorful antics that are based on her years of experiences with the practices.
I would also say to those pondering the purchase of her audio selections, that you can't go wrong in choosing any one of her precious recordings. However, you will be missing out if you don't listen to them all.

A funny teaching on Tonglen. If you don't know what Tonglen is, learn. It will change your life (no guarantee). This is a great source to learn Tonglen. If you don't want to spend the money on this particular book, because you aren't sure what Tonglen is. Research it, and then come back and get this book. Or don't. Awakening My Own Compassion
For the past three years, I have noticed that my circle of compassion (as Pema Chodron calls it) has grown smaller and smaller, until even myself wasn't included in it. The dwindling of this circle has gone unnoticed and it wasn't until after listening to a few chapters of this audio program that such a happening was made apparent to me. I thought myself to be such a jerk, both to others and myself, and now I'm realizing that such an attitude is part of the spiritual warrior's path. The journey to the Self is variegated and deeply personal. Therefore, there is no method that can be used; there are only techniques that work and those that do not. This audio program primarily uses two techniques: Tonglen and Lojong. Both of these have proved, to me, quite helpful in this journey. I can now say that, after finishing this program and practicing Tonglen for 10 minutes every night for a week, I don't feel quite so much like a jerk. I still feel like a worm, but the practice encourages me to feel my worm-ness and get in touch with what that feels like, and to realize that other people feel this worm-ness too. And by not running away from this feeling and instead breathing it in, getting to know it fully, compassion will grow: for myself and for other people. I bought this book 7 years ago and forgot all the teachings when things were going really well. Now I'm back in the same position before I bought the book, haha. This time, I'll take it slowly, one moment at a time, one breath at a time.

Not what you might expect
This book is not what I was expecting to have; the sound is terrible, bad quality to say the least. You hear all throughout the book people coughing and moving chairs much more clearly than narration. I have tried different books and others are far better than this one in sound quality. Meditations are not very different from others. I would not recommend this audible book, buy a hard copy and read it instead.
