After the sudden death of her husband, Sheryl Sandberg felt certain that she and her children would never feel pure joy again. "I was in 'the void,'" she writes, "a vast emptiness that fills your heart and lungs and restricts your ability to think or even breathe." Her friend Adam Grant, a psychologist at Wharton, told her there are concrete steps people can take to recover and rebound from life-shattering experiences. We are not born with a fixed amount of resilience. It is a muscle that everyone can build.

As Nora reminds us, there will be no happy endings - but there will be new beginnings.

Suicide would appear to be the last taboo. Even incest is now discussed freely in popular media, but the suicide of a loved one is still an act most people are unable to talk about or even admit to their closest family or friends. This is just one of the many painful and paralyzing truths that author Carla Fine discovered when her husband, a successful young physician, took his own life in December 1989. And being unable to speak openly and honestly about the cause of her pain made it all the more difficult for her to survive.

Description
A New Resource for Those Experiencing Loss
With It's OK That You're Not OK, Megan Devine offers a profound new approach to both the experience of grief and the way we help others who have endured tragedy. Having experienced grief from both sides - as both a therapist and as a woman who witnessed the accidental drowning of her beloved partner - Megan writes with deep insight about the unspoken truths of loss, love, and healing. She debunks the culturally prescribed goal of returning to a normal, "happy" life, replacing it with a far healthier middle path, one that invites us to build a life alongside grief rather than seeking to overcome it.
On this unabridged audio recording read by the author, Megan offers stories, research, life tips, and creative and mindfulness-based practices to guide us through an experience we all must face. With Megan's gentle but direct guidance, you'll learn:
- Why well-meaning advice, therapy, and spiritual wisdom so often end up making it harder for people in grief
- How challenging the myths of grief - doing away with stages, timetables, and unrealistic ideals about how grief should unfold - allows us to accept it as a mystery to be honored instead of a problem to solve
- Practical guidance for managing stress, improving sleep, and decreasing anxiety without trying to "fix" your pain
Many people who have suffered a loss feel judged, dismissed, and misunderstood by a culture that wants to "solve" grief. Megan writes, "Grief no more needs a solution than love needs a solution." It's OK That You're Not OK is a book for grieving people, those who love them, and all those seeking to love themselves - and each other - better.

Essential for navigating grief as a griever and supporter of someone grieving
Grief is such a messy, unknown thing when you’re going through it blind (as most do). Navigating the fog of early grief yourself is overwhelming enough without navigating how to handle others. This book both comforts and validates all that encompasses early grief, while providing a valuable tool book for you and your loved ones to draw on for support. As someone both grieving and a supporter of a grieving friend, I learned so much about how to take the messy unknowns and better understand what grief is, means and does to a person. I bought it for my mother on paperback, but will be stealing it to go back and refer to, writing my own notes in the margins of the many “Yes!” moments Megan identified for me. I’ve shared passages with friends and my husband. If anyone has any questions or concerns about supporting a grieving loved one, this book should be their first stop. If you are grieving, it’s a beautiful, touching place to start your journey too. Thank you for this community, Megan!

Finally a book that is truthful and comes from the heart!
Before purchasing this book from Audible, I read many of the reviews. As with all reviews some will be great and others negative.
What I took from this book from the very beginning was the honesty and truthfulness. Finally someone gets what I feel inside. It spoke of areas where people treaded lightly afraid to talk or do something as it might be taboo.
This book has touched me in many ways but mostly it has filled a void in my heart. I am glad that I purchased it in Audible so that I can listen to it when I need to. I also want to purchase the actual book so that I can look at the exercises and share it with my loved ones, the individuals who don’t ask what I need but are there when I just need someone by my side.
Thank you for your honesty and kindness. I am so very sorry for your loss and thank you for sharing your experiences and that of others so that we can all feel like we have a person in our corner that just gets it.

Wonderful book for persons at any stage of grief
Best book on the topic of grief I've encountered so far. Definitely written with those experiencing grief in mind.
I thought this book was rather unique in the amount of validation it provides on the experience of grief, as well as the latest scientific evidence on the topic, including a sociological perspective on why so many people are feeling invalidated and misunderstood during their grief journey. This book would surely also be helpful to persons trying to better understand grief in order to support others on their journey, including grief counselors.
I also find that concrete and helpful tools are shared throughout the book, specifically geared towards each stage of grief, including the best use of self-care, self-reflection and journaling for example.
Last remark: I personally enjoyed the author's tone of voice, as I found her soothing, kind, and compassionate. I found this made the book a safe listen during the early stages of grief or during difficult moments in grief. I think it might not have been appropriate in fact for the other to use a different more entertainment oriented tone of voice considering the topic discussed and the target audience.

Thank you
I can’t say that this is a book for everyone because everyone’s grief and journey through it is different. This was the book for me and when I needed it. Almost two painful years after the death of a parent. It validated how I was feeling, expressed my experiences through grief in a way I couldn’t but it rang true, it gave me a peaceful place to just be in sadness, despair, hope and gratitude that I had the chance to love my parent the way I did which is why I’m grieving so hard. Thank you, Megan. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. My soul feels more at peace though I’m still very much so grieving.
