Auberon is one of the first and most important colony worlds in humanity's reach, and the new conquering faction has come to claim it. Governor Rittenaur has come to bring civilization and order to the far outpost and guarantee the wealth and power of the Empire.

But Auberon already has its own history, a complex culture, and a criminal kingpin named Erich with very different plans. In a world of deceit, violence, and corruption, the greatest danger Rittenaur faces is love.

Some Meds in Your Sugar

I love it when otherwise mindless brain candy surprises me with a thoughtful if not deep question. Happens in this book.

Another masterpiece.

It's definitely a dark tale. Just goes to show you that the Empire wasn't going to last forever anyway. Good job recycling a couple of familiar characters.

Tight, Clean, Pure Expanse Perfection

In this reader's opinion, JSAC is/are putting out the finest Sci-Fi of it's kind right now. The Expanse stories are not exactly hard, opera, adventure or literary. They are all of these things and none of them. Somehow distinctive within well-worn genre settings.

If the authors dig a bit deeply within modern SF tropes in their Expanse Novels, they can be forgiven, as that is perhaps the only reasonable critique for the series. By contrast, the novellas benefit from the limits their form places on the JSAC story style. There's not enough room for anything but the character revelations and thriller-quick plot movements that JSAC excel(s) at.

All the happenings sit inside the political, psychological landscapes both familiar and wondrous that the Expanse series is best known for. It's a canvas that heightens each person and place within. The vivid colors and dimensions swirl off the page (or through the headphones) without spilling melodramatically, or ponderously over the top. It's just one space-bound thriller twist, or cool character flash after another.

Good, but short.

Great expanse story as always. It's a "novella" so it's going to be short. However, the story certainly needed more to make the short time just a bit more interesting. The massive cliffhanger at the end also disappointed me. Just as it started to REALLY pick up, BOOM. It's over. I will impatiently wait for my next journey through the excellent expanse universe. Worth your time, and money! Just, don't expect a detailed or as complete a narrative as one might be accustomed to in the normal series.

Great Ending

Solid story. Another mysterious supplemental novella from Corey. Several of these really come into play with the main story, and I think this one will definitely be important. With these cheaper recordings, don't forget to consider paying cash rather than wasting a credit!

pretty good. not the best.

great job by the narrator Mays as usual. was hoping for some real gut punch dynamic or character implosions but I just did not feel like that happened. but Ill settle for what I got. I like how the author calls back other characters. I listened to this book and now I want to relisten to the series and everything in order.

Excellent addition to The Expanse Universe.

Thoroughly enjoyed this addition to The Expanse universe. Good to see how Eric is doing. Continues the first-class character development, and serves as a keen reflection of the socio-political reality of this world.

Great story. Too short.

The story, narrator, and writing were great but the book was just a little to short.

Brilliant

What can I say? Another exceptional story from “The Expanse” universe.
Don’t listen to detractors - even if it’s a darker story it’s nevertheless a gem.

Not my favorite but I love them all

I love the little novellas for The Expanse series because it "expands' (pun intended) on the characters you know and love (Amos in the Churn, Bobby in Gods of Risk, little Cara in Strange Dogs....). That said, I didn't love any of these characters in Auberon, consequently I was not as invested. Also, I'm sensing a theme with the people President Duarte of Laconia puts in charge of his off world conquests. This flaw in these "Governors" is the crutch of one too many plots--it bored me a bit. With all that criticism, I still like the story. I love the Expanse universe and it was nice seeing that it wasn't just Amos who got away in the end. :)
