Publisher's Summary

The Grishaverse will be coming to Netflix soon with Shadow and Bone, an original series!

The wolves are circling, and a young king will face his greatest challenge in the explosive finale of the instant number-one New York Times best-selling King of Scars Duology.

The Demon King. As Fjerda’s massive army prepares to invade, Nikolai Lantsov will summon every bit of his ingenuity and charm - and even the monster within - to win this fight. But a dark threat looms that cannot be defeated by a young king’s gift for the impossible.

The Stormwitch. Zoya Nazyalensky has lost too much to war. She saw her mentor die and her worst enemy resurrected, and she refuses to bury another friend. Now duty demands she embrace her powers to become the weapon her country needs. No matter the cost.

The Queen of Mourning. Deep undercover, Nina Zenik risks discovery and death as she wages war on Fjerda from inside its capital. But her desire for revenge may cost her country its chance at freedom and Nina the chance to heal her grieving heart.

King. General. Spy. Together they must find a way to forge a future in the darkness. Or watch a nation fall.

Amazing!

This world has been one that captured me from start to finish. The story itself enthralled me, keeping me guessing the entire way. The performance, of not only this, but all books in this series, has been so artfully done, I was begging for the start of each and every chapter. It won't be easy knowing that there aren't any other stories to tell in this world. . . yet. But I am sure this will be an adventure I will want to visit again and again.

GUYS 😭👏🏼😍

So this has officially become my favorite book that Leigh has written. 😭😍 It has taken over as reigning champ from the Six of Crows duology and fully captured my heart. The first book was awesome but this one was just freaking beautiful. Seeing everyone come together from past books made me so giddy I could hardly contain myself. It was a ride of emotions and the ENDING?! Ugh just amazing. But also not only was it just a fantastic book but let’s give it up for Lauren Fortgang because she rocked it and is absolutely is one of my favorite narrators. All around 10 outta 10 y’all. 👏🏼👏🏼

Solid Conventional Fantasy with YA Elements

This novel accurately portrays events one might expect to occur in a mythical nation at war. Leigh Bardugo's world is populated by a magical strain of humans (the Grisha) that are used as military weapons.. willingly in Ravka, forcibly (otherwise condemned as "witches") in other kingdoms. In this novel: alliances are formed and betrayed, spies scheme for assets, Grisha fight with magic, mechanized armies clash, and evil forces take advantage of chaos. Bardugo drives an engrossing plot at a breakneck pace to weave interesting plotlines into a realistic picture of a believable world at war. This book is great for fans of genuine immersive fantasy.
It should be noted that the author still adheres to YA Fantasy patterns - fans of that genre will still be gratified - but the results are mixed. The frustrated Zoya-Nikolai attraction makes sense in the context of the overall plot, for example - even adding convincing tension to the overall story - but the Nina-Hanne lesbian attraction/transsexual character plotline feels like tacked-on "woke" sensibilities added for the sake of being added. 'Young Adult' plotlines can both strengthen and weaken a story, and Bardugo demonstrates that in this book.

Lauren Fortang is much-improved in this 'Grishaverse' effort. Her character voices are well-chosen, accents are appropriately subdued (while still distinctive), and pronunciations are excellent. The sibilance from earlier Bardugo novels has unfortunately returned to some extent (avoid headphones, reader), but the upgrades outnumber the downgrades. The most notable improvement in this particular narrative is that her usually plodding pacing has improved to "spot-on" status. Well done.

This book isn't perfect. Besides some of the contrived elements and cringeworthy "s"s in the narration, reading 'King of Scars' is essential to understanding this book (and that one is best enjoyed if you have read the 'Shadow and Bone' series)..

this has little standalone merit.

..but this much more mature fantasy novel set in Bardugo's ingeniously-crafted world is undeniably good - easily rating 4 stars out of 5. Spend the Credit and lose yourself in some quality fantasy!!

Even better than Shadow & Bone

I picked up King of Scars and Rule of Wolves because I lo Ed the characters of Nikolai and Zoya. I was curious about what problems could arise after Alina defeated the Darkling in the Shadow & Bone series.

I was supremely pleased with the narrative and very much enjoyed the mutual slow burn pining. 10/10 would recommend.
