A once up-and-coming detective, she's been given this beat as punishment after filing a sexual harassment complaint against a supervisor. Story
The man most hated by the LAPD - a black lawyer who has made his name by bringing lawsuits alleging racism and brutality by police officers - has been found murdered on the eve of a high-profile trial. The list of suspects includes half the police force. And Harry Bosch is the detective chosen to head the investigation. The political dangers of the case are huge. If it's not investigated fairly, the public outcry could make the Rodney King riots look tame. But a full investigation will take Bosch into the ugliest corners of law enforcement.

Publisher's Summary
Experience this special edition of The Black Echo, Michael Connelly’s award-winning crime novel narrated by Titus Welliver, star of the Bosch series on Amazon Prime Video - includes an exclusive bonus interview with the author and the actor featuring insider info and more.
For maverick LAPD homicide detective Harry Bosch, the body in the drainpipe at Mulholland Dam is more than another anonymous statistic. This one is personal...because the murdered man was a fellow Vietnam "tunnel rat" who had fought side by side with him in a hellish underground war. Now Bosch is about to relive the horror of Nam. From a dangerous maze of blind alleys to a daring criminal heist beneath the city, his survival instincts will once again be tested to their limit. Pitted against enemies inside his own department and forced to make the agonizing choice between justice and vengeance, Bosch goes on the hunt for a killer whose true face will shock him.
"Michael Connelly is the master of the universe in which he lives, and that is the sphere of crime thrillers." - Huffington Post.

Excellent Recording of a Great Crime Thriller
I have never seen the AmazonPrime Television treatments of these novels, but if they are faithful to Michael Connelly's vision, I need to check them out. The Mystery/Crime in this introductory episode is out-of-the-headlines realistic (involving "Tunnel Rat" Vietnam vets robbing a bank from under the street and betraying each other), the setting is palpably gritty, the action scenes are well-paced & suspenseful, and the dialogue/plot progression/characterization is masterful. The flow is a little bit klunky here & there, but Connelly knows how to write screenplay-quality entertainment.
Fortuitously, Brilliance Audio contributes to the quality of this recording with excellent casting and production standards (I have found that some Connelly audio offerings suffer from weak narration/overproduction).
Titus Welliver's diction, timbre, and cadence are spot-on and worthy of praise. Welliver's delivery is admittedly fairly monotone at times, but his voice-acting more than makes up for it: characters are presented emotively, are free of affected accents, and are easily-distinguishable. Taken altogether, this read is well above-average.
I rate this audiobook 9.5 stars out of 10. The extra interviews with Connelly and Welliver are fun (albeit not terribly useful).
Regardless, 'The Black Echo: Special Edition' belongs in the library of any fan of rollercoaster-ride Police Procedurals/Mystery-Thrillers. I bought the book when it was offered on sale but if you're contemplating it, spend the Credit. It's worth it.

Great Performance by Titus
I want to read all the books before watching the TV series. Titus’ reading on this special edition will allow me to read the rest of the series with his voice and pace in my head.

A Bosch classic
Expect the unexpected as this Bosch novel rolls along. Nice balance between police procedure and unexpected happenstances. No awkward plot twists but a plot that rolls out in a way it could happen and the use of recollection to add insights.

Loved it!
I loved having it read by Titus Welliver! He is the face of Bosch in the show and seeing as this was the first Bosch book I read, I found it his voice was who I would have heard in my head anyways when Bosch spoke in the story! Perfect! Loved it!

Brilliant!
I can't say enough good things about this book -- both the story and the narration. Titus Welliver is brilliant as Bosch. The plot was complex and intriguing and I loved listening to the steps Bosch took to unravel the mystery. With so little to go on, he painstakingly picked apart every detail and followed them to solve the murder. I did not want the book to end! There are very few books I feel that way about. I had listened to previous Michael Connolly books about Bosch, but the narrator (Len Cariou) did not work for me. Titus Welliver is perfect!

Loved this book & especially it being read by Titus!
As a fan of Bosch books because of my dad and watching the tv series, it was such a joy to hear the man who plays him read the book! For the negative reviews against the reader, I highly recommend you watch the tv series and see why Titus was the perfect narrator for this book (I only wish he did more)! The stories are a bit different than the tv versions but I recognize the episodes as I listen to the original version, and love every moment of it!

Narrator
Very good storyline but I would have enjoyed the action or emotional parts much more if the narrator didn’t have such a flat voice. Too many sections where I was so totally bored because of the cadence of his voice, which showed so little emotional range.
