Butyrate, and other short chain fatty acids, are made by beneficial bacteria in the gut, through fermentation of dietary fiber. These SCFAs play a crucial role in maintaining gut health by providing energy for beneficial bacteria, sustaining the gut barrier that prevents leaky gut and certain autoimmune conditions and generally reducing inflammation. This study suggests that increasing gut butyrate availability can improve BP.

Proton Pump Inhibitor Use and Incident Hypertension in Menopausal Women | Journal of the American Heart Association

Journal of the American Heart Association June 2025.

    Prilosec/Omeprazole, Nexium, Prevacid, Protonix.

Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are the treatment of choice for conditions such as esophagitis and peptic ulcer disease, and they are among the most prescribed medications in the United States. In 2016, one of the PPIs was dispensed more than 70 million times in the United States.

Inappropriate PPI use either due to prolonged use or lacking an appropriate indication has been linked with several adverse events such as bone fractures, pneumonia, and kidney damage, especially in older people. Also Osteoporosis, weakened immune systems, higher risk of gut infections and dysbiosis, protein deficiency and deficiencies of B12, iron, magnesium, and other minerals.

Nitric oxide (NO) is a potent vasodilator that plays a critical role in blood pressure (BP) regulation.7 Recent studies have shown the importance of the nitrate–nitrite–NO pathway in the production of NO. The conversion of nitrite to NO in the stomach is dependent on the presence of gastric acid.8 PPIs are highly effective in suppressing gastric acid secretion and are hypothesized to affect NO production from nitrate/nitrites.

How Exercise Fights Anxiety and Depression - The New York Times

Decades of research have established that movement has a positive effect on mental health.

July 16, 2025 Isabelle Zhao for The New York Times

When it comes to mental health, most treatments for conditions like depression or anxiety come with caveats. Medications work for some symptoms, but can exacerbate others. Cognitive behavioral therapy is effective for many patients, but not all.

But there’s one strategy that seems to work for most people and almost all experts endorse, and that’s regular exercise.
