There is nothing more essential to our health and well-being than breathing. Yet, as a species, humans have lost the ability to breathe correctly, with grave consequences. Journalist James Nestor travels the world to figure out what went wrong and how to fix it. The answers aren’t found in pulmonology labs, as we might expect, but in the muddy digs of ancient burial sites, secret Soviet facilities, New Jersey choir schools, and the smoggy streets of São Paulo. Nestor tracks down men and women exploring the hidden science behind ancient breathing practices.

Thrive or die: That's the rule of evolution. Despite this brutal logic, some species have learned to survive in even the most hostile conditions. Others couldn't - and perished. While incremental genetic adaptations hone the physiology of nearly every creature on this planet, there's another evolutionary force that is just as important: the power of choice. In this explosive investigation into the limits of endurance, journalist Scott Carney discovers how humans can wedge control over automatic physiological responses into the breaking point between stress and biology.

extremely misleading and poorly researched
this book has it all, and it should considering its length of over 40 hours. While I did my best to try and listen to this book in its entirety I had to stop at chapter 15 after 19 hours.
the quantity of information in this book unfortunately does not make up for its terrible quality. while some of the information provided is good and even excellent an equal amount of it is poor and even dangerously wrong.
while listening to this book two things became apparent to me. firstly is that this book often feels like a giant advertisement with affiliated links and even discount codes. from supplements to exercise machines and even sci-fi like contraptions which are not vetted by science or research, this book sells it all. this is of course a massive conflict of interest for someone writing a self help and health book...how does anyone know that he isn't getting significant pushback from his links or has reached out to every supplement company he could to offer a chapter in his book? because of this conflict I recommend taking any information in this book with a full tablespoon of salt and extreme skepticism.
this brings me to my second problem with this title. every chapter of this book is information heavy but lacks depth of research. even topics I am greatly interested in and have a personal bias towards, I cannot say that Ben Greenfield provides accurate information because it lacks consistency across the book. some chapters are sound but others are complete quackery. he simply does not spend enough time on the topics to properly vet them. as a result of this none of the information he provides can be taken at face value. he makes great points about certain lifestyle factors and dietary interventions but then speaks to the dangers of vaccines and benefits of magnets at the same time...so what is scientifically sound and what is lunacy?
My conclusion? do not purchase this book. instead purchase books that are specific to areas covered in this book. if you want to know about fasting or specific dietary strategies, look for authors who specialize in those areas. if you want to know about nootropics or psychedelic's than look specifically at those.
I appreciate the work that Ben Greenfield must have put into this book, but it does more harm than good by promoting bad science and ideas not based in reality. just don't buy it, its a waste of time at best and dangerously misleading at worst.

So much bro science
I’d be highly skeptical if anyone is meant to use all the stuff suggested in this book. The number of paragraphs that lead with “some studies show” or “some research suggests” which automatically raises questions. There is so much content that no one could possibly know what is good or bad about what Ben is suggesting.

Easily captivated by the great content!
Initially concerned by the audio sample which sounded cavernous and the critics given by some about the performance, I decided to go for it and was pleasantly surprised by the quality and appropriate performance of the narrator James Newcomb, with such a difficult challenge of naming biology, chemistry , scientific terms included in this great document that Mr. Greenfield as created.
Love it the way the voice is steady like an serious instructor.. not an entertainer .. I'm looking for knowledge and improvement on the concept proposed by Ben Greenfield. Going through the document is easy since it's not necessary linear and you may navigate from one chapter to the other at your convenience on so many subjects.
Great work guys! Enjoy this beauty , live long and prosper!
P.S. I went through Beyond Training and now this one is even better , a winner all the way!

Great Content - Narration Needs Improvement
I was so excited for this book because I love Ben Greenfield. My first disappointment was that Ben wasn’t narrating, ok no problem. By the end of the first chapter I was so annoyed because the person doing the narration clearly knows nothing about advanced health because he can’t pronounce half of the words in the book. The mispronunciations of norepinephrine, Sam-E, Synaptic cleft and many other words was so distracting that I was having trouble focusing on the content which is great, but I recommend buying the hard copy and skipping the audible.

Great material, poor narration
The material is very good and well laid out. On the other hand, the narration is horrible. Mono-tonous /hypnotic voice and many mistakes in pronunciation of medical terms. For a book like this the narrator should have been provided a list of terms that needed to be pronounced correctly. I can accept a few mispronunciations but they are all the way through the book; has become a distraction from the material. Agree with others that it would be better if Ben Greenfield read it. I will likely return it and purchase the hard copy as a reference book.

The narrator is the worst!
The book itself, so far(I'm 6 hours in), is very informative. I don't think I would have gotten through it in paper form, as it is very technical.
The narration, however, is horrible, and making it increasinglydifficult to get through. I have to give credit to the narrator; this is a 40 hour book. But I have never listened to an audio book that was so poorly edited. The audio book is riddled with gaps, repeating, even throat clearing, gasping for breath, and gibberish noises by the narrator. In addition, trying to follow along is difficult, because the narrator mispronounces soooo many words. It is extremely frustrating.

How do you access the content he references to?
Throughout the book he says you can get the notes/videos/ illustrations Ect. If you go to boundless book.com/18? Or I think that is what he says. But the books website requires the receipt number of the book you purchased in order to access the extra content. How do you access it if you purchased the audio book through audible????
Thank you

great book. sketchy pronunciations at best
A great book well organized perfect amount of detail and other resources. The only problem with listening to the book was the sketchy pronunciations and blatently incorrect pronunciations. For example "baggles" instead of bagels.
Someone should have "proof read" the recording for these obvious and innumerable flaws of pronunciation. Aside from that the narrator did a fine job.
l feel publisher owes me at least a kindle copy of the book so I can verify what the author intended.
Again I loved the book and have listened to it more than once. But, still wonder how so many prounciations ended up in a published work.

Distracted by terrible mispronounciation
Should have looked for a Reader who has some medical background or training. So far, the info is good but when so much of it isn’t articulated correctly, it’s super distracting. Can’t even say ‘glial’ cells or ‘epinephrine’ correctly.
Which also leads to the information sounding less credible. The words should be enunciated correctly else the material fall flat.
Sorry to the reader. You have a beautiful voice. Should have probably listened to how to pronounce all these medical/biology/physiology terms in advance.
Makes for a poor listening experience.

Narrator is horrible
I love the content of this book and I love Ben Greenfield’s work, but I can’t tell you how terrible this narrator is. He miss pronounces so many important medical words, and supplement words it’s irritating to listen to. Audible should have had been read his own book If he was willing to do it. Or at least have someone who knew the words so they didn’t mess them up so bad. I’m sorry narrator, you should’ve done your medical research and learned how to say those words!

biohacker's bible
single most impactful health book and I've read quite a few. Really dwarves Genius Life which is good info but is very basic level and is missing a lot to be honest. have only implemented a fraction (earthing, oil pulling, gravity boots, trampoline, dozens more..) of what's contained yet have experienced a personal evolution catapult or portal even. pronunciations absolutely fine could not imagine not listening to this comprehensive monstrosity. if you've read many others like me this will likely reintroduce many key concepts and familiar names but will also introduce many interesting new ideas, habits, practices to explore

Fascinant
Quelques défauts dans la lecture (bâillement, raclement de gorge, ...) mais le livre est passionnant.
