i started reading from Roya Road when my first daughter was born. Listening this far through now is always a treat.

If i had to describe this series in one word..it would be, CONSISTENT. This is a diamond in the mud when it comes to litrpgs. In a sea of mediocrity and copy and paste edgelords, spellswords and assassins, Defier stands out. Some of the best world building ive seen in a litrpg .This was a fantastic addition and i cant wait for the next book.

I have been quite critical in past book reviews of this series because I found the narration had issues. Namely a seeming need to make many female characters sound too immature, sullen or even sultry. BUT with the death of a certain female character (no spoiler) I found the narrator turned over a new leaf and has done a better job voicing some of the female characters. The narrator is very skilled and extremely clear which I deeply appreciate, but I had felt the experience was marred by some questionable creative choices. That has improved so all due credit goes to the narrator. I do enjoy his voice a lot and any other critiques I’ve had could be more laid at the feet of the author.

The Authors DotF world seems to be expanding which has improved the pallet used to colour this world of his. That has been welcome. I do think the authors vocabulary does need expanding. You simply can’t have every thing said by the main character to be said “with a snort”, however the books are great and I’ve been worn down to not caring about those things. The authors handle on the cultivation/level up system is immense. It’s deeply impressive and again all credit due the author. For me book 6 is when I settled into the pocket, it felt to me like a bit of a slog early on but it’s become genuinely enjoyable. I suppose that while I’ve been critical of the level of writing, it more than makes up for that in sheer pacing. The pacing is probably the greatest gift by the author and because of it, he has probably written more events into any one of his books than 2 of anyone else’s books. That seems a fair trade IMHO. The litrpg is a different kind of world and it’s important that I adjust to it accordingly. Book 6 allowed me to do that in earnest. Thanks to the author and the narrator for their work. My praise does not come easily but it’s come none the less. It’s been a joy so far.
