Story
Compared to Charles' other books, this is more about no dig, eliminating weeds, garden layout, compost making, and using compost. There is also a history of no-dig vegetable gardening in the last 100 years. I want listeners to understand the context and the reasons why no dig has not been much valued until recently, and why it is now. This audiobook has 18 sections, covering the key methods and wonderful results of no dig, from starting with weeds to sowing and planting straightaway, and cropping soon after.

Story
When Monty Don's golden retriever, Nigel, became the surprise star of BBC's Gardeners' World, inspiring huge interest, fan mail and even his own social media accounts, Monty Don wanted to explore what makes us connect with animals quite so deeply. In many respects Nigel is a very ordinary dog - charming, handsome and obedient, as so many are. He is also a much loved family pet. He is also a star. By telling Nigel's story, Monty relates his relationships with other special dogs in his life in a memoir of his dogs past and very much present.

Story
To grow produce of the highest nutritional quality the essential minerals lacking in our soil must be replaced, but this re-mineralization calls for far more attention to detail than the simple addition of composted manure or NPK fertilizers. The Intelligent Gardener demystifies the process, while simultaneously debunking much of the false and misleading information perpetuated by both the conventional and organic agricultural movements. In doing so, it conclusively establishes the link between healthy soil, healthy food, and healthy people.

You’ll discover that healthy soil is teeming with life - not just earthworms and insects, but a staggering multitude of bacteria, fungi, and other microorganisms.

A Delightful Stroll through Longmeadow
Monty offers a wealth of information to new gardeners, and an engaging review for pros. His narration is relaxing and conversational, and does not lecture. The true delight of "Down to Earth" is how it evokes the feeling of a long walk through Longmeadow with Monty.

Wonderful, whimsical and wise.
What a most pleasing listen during rather unpleasant times. Listening to Monty himself describe vibrant scenes within his own garden is both educational and soothing. I very much recommend purchasing, whether you are an experienced gardener, a novice, or someone simply looking to escape to a lush garden for some time through Monty's delightful and passionate imagery.

I loved this book.
I decided to follow up on Monty Don after watch Big Dreams Small Spaces on Netflix. Great audible book with lots of ideas and useful info.
One things that was very distracting was the "lip smacking" after most sentences. I don't know if a filter of some sort would have helped but really was off-putting. His voice is very soothing while he was reading though.
Wonderful book to listen to while gardening! I have listened at least 3 times through.

Packed Full of Knowledge
I bought this after reading his book "Nigel". That book is a story book. Charming snippets of his life with animals which are truly reminiscent of the James Herriot style.
I thought this book was going to be similar and be stories of the garden. Not so. This is definitely a "how to" book.
At first I was disappointed. I wanted the "story" aspect present in "Nigel". That said, I quickly changed my mind and became hooked. Monty has a charming and evocative speech pattern which is absolutely charming to listen to. Couple that with his very casual and real approach to gardening, and you have a winner. Monty is a true proponent of the Organic Garden and Wildlife BUT puts no stress onto the gardener. The ultimate message is enjoy the try; it will all come right eventually.
I have listened to it now four times in a row. Really not hard to do. I am really trying to transfer all that wealth of knowledge into my poor brain. As I potter round my garden with my dogs tagging along, I am joined by this friendly voice hinting and guiding me through all the perils and joys of garden.
If you enjoy gardening, then this book holds a tomb of knowledge that is hard to find elsewhere. Remember that Monty lives in UK, so be prepared to adjust planting times appropriately for your zone.
