Publisher's Summary

Captivating and action-packed, From Blood and Ash is a sexy, addictive, and unexpected fantasy perfect for fans of Sarah J. Maas and Laura Thalassa.

A Maiden...

Chosen from birth to usher in a new era, Poppy’s life has never been her own. The life of the Maiden is solitary. Never to be touched. Never to be looked upon. Never to be spoken to. Never to experience pleasure. Waiting for the day of her Ascension, she would rather be with the guards, fighting back the evil that took her family, than preparing to be found worthy by the gods. But the choice has never been hers.

A Duty...

The entire kingdom’s future rests on Poppy’s shoulders, something she’s not even quite sure she wants for herself. Because a Maiden has a heart. And a soul. And longing. And when Hawke, a golden-eyed guard honor bound to ensure her Ascension, enters her life, destiny and duty become tangled with desire and need. He incites her anger, makes her question everything she believes in, and tempts her with the forbidden.

A Kingdom...

Forsaken by the gods and feared by mortals, a fallen kingdom is rising once more, determined to take back what they believe is theirs through violence and vengeance. And as the shadow of those cursed draws closer, the line between what is forbidden and what is right becomes blurred. Poppy is not only on the verge of losing her heart and being found unworthy by the gods, but also her life when every blood-soaked thread that holds her world together begins to unravel.

HOLY BURNING HELL

okay, okay, okay. thIS BOOK IS FREAKING AMAZING AND I CANT EVEN HANDLE IT. Narration is on point. And the characters are just *chiefs kiss* brilliant. Let’s start with Poppy — badass supreme. And Hawke? Well, he could literally step on my hand and I’d thank him for it. And just UGH. it’s beautiful y’all. just pure beautiful. i have planted my flag on this hill and will glad die on it fighting off the craven. it just has so many twists and turns and every time you think it’s going to end, something else happens to make my brain explode. it’s spooky, sexy - like daaaamn i need to fan myself, full of mystery, scenes that make you so made you want to chuck your phone or just do something violent (which is always what our glorious Poppy turns to) or scenes that make you melt into a freaking puddle or scenes that make you laugh uncontrollably because gatdamn Hawke is hilarious. I love it. wish i lived in this series. and yep. that’ll bout do it. NOW RELEASE THE SECOND ONE. thank you so much.

So far, a complete waste of a credit

Thirteen chapters in and I am still waiting for this bad ass heroine as stated in reviews to show herself. I am waiting for the story to begin. I am seriously bored. I would be more interested if she was still sneaking out, helping some and killing the “turned” or even if this was an actual romance, but instead I am currently suffering through a young female’s tormented life. Living in a place where she is supposed to be cherished but instead she is mentally and physically abused, but has no voice. Is isolated and who has a serious case of lack of confidence finding security in a false sense of bravado and by touching a knife she carries under her clothing at all times.

I think the narration should have been done by a younger female, it was very off putting to have what was a more mature voice speaking the words of an 18 year old. I also find the narration more monotone than anything, which means at times an entire chapter skips by and I have heard nothing....meaning I have had to skip back a number of times. With that said, I have skipped forward quite a few times as well, like the whipping scene, no need to subject myself to that, and the guard and the arrow scene, your guard is shot and tells you to run away but instead you run towards him and break down?? Self preservation is obviously not one of her skills. It made no sense to me that a woman could turn herself off and easily kill a person with a knife through the brain (mercy killing or not) yet goes into shock and nearly has a breakdown seeing someone shot with an arrow. Pick a side author, cannot have it both ways.

Unless the rest of this book is explosive, the next book in this series will not be read.

Maybe I am not far enough in the book but I don’t understand how the abuse works into this story. I help people with self confidence, anxiety and moving forward after abuse so right now this book rubs me the wrong way, not to mention the LACK of the romance aspect. I wanted to throw a paranormal, fantasy, romance between language learning, true crime podcasts and murder mysteries...I obviously chose the wrong book!

Interesting Setting, Okay Romance

The setting and world could be a good Dark Fantasy setting if we get to see more of it. The Romance feels a little quick and sudden. It does feel like the world building and character development played backseat to the smutt. It was enjoyable although not as deep as I was hoping.

amazing narrator

story was very gripping, a few predictable plot twists and outcomes for certain characters but overall enjoyed. Stina could read me an article about the mechanics of gastric bypass and I'd be enthralled. favorite narrator by far.

Brilliant as a horror novel, terrible for romance

This book is brilliant.

For the first twenty-five chapters, I hated this book. Despised it. It was trivial; it was uncomfortable; and it was desperately unsatisfying. Both of the main characters were trope-ridden abominations, and their relationship seemed dangerously unhealthy.

Then, it happened. The secrets hidden throughout the book started to merge and form this genius, captivating political scheme. The scenes that made me uncomfortable were subtly arranged that way by the author, foreshadowing the reveal, and both main characters really were too good to be true

You can tell that Jennifer L. Armentrout spent many, many hours revising her outline and fleshing out her plot. All of the little details and hidden meanings make me want to re-read this again immediately, just so I can appreciate how much work and time the author put into this novel.

Only rating it 3 stars though for some of the concerning non-consensual scenes in the book. it works as a horror novel, but not a fantasy romance novel (like advertised).

Great Story Character Twist and Narration

Considering I am not a fan of books more over audiobooks, I enjoyed every bits of this audiobook, the story was astonishingly interesting. The character development was so good, I got attached to every single one of them. I have never been bored while listening, the narrator does a great job at mimicking voice and making sound like I am in the story even when I am washing the dishes or so. The twist of the story makes it far more interesting. Definitely much recommended !
