"Adequate" Story.. Horrible Sound Quality

Maggie James explores the frankly bizarre journey of reconciliation for 25-year-old parolee 'Mark Slater' - freed from incarceration for helping murder a two-year-old when he was known as 'Joshua Barker'. Mark navigates post-release relationships, almost seduces the sister of his victim for some reason, deals with the family that abandoned him in prison, and confronts 'Adam Campbell' - the boy who bullied/influenced/controlled him at 11 and actually committed the brutal murder while Mark/Joshua "helplessly" watched.
The book is capably written, cleverly planned, and described with visceral realism.. but is strikingly implausible - with an expectation of empathy for the protagonist that never emerges. This was a hard one to swallow.

I could have set aside reservations regarding this book, I suppose - if not for the ridiculously lazy attention paid to production values by QUEST Audio/W.F.Howes Ltd sound engineers. Reader Rosie Akerman was a reasonable casting choice - turning in a professional performance - but the book sounds tinny, spliced re-recorded segments are inexplicably distinctive, and they apparently don't even *try* to soften Akerman's mouth sounds and creaking chair as she reads. The recording is as amateurish as anything that I've ever heard.

Altogether, this audiobook merits a mere 3 stars out of 10. Asking a Credit for it is unconscionable.. it wasn't even worthwhile for "free".
