Podium did the right thing here

When the author posted on his Patreon about an audiobook, the first thing that popped into my head was "This will be a waste of a credit". Because as I much as I love this series, the books are very short. So I was pleasantly surprised when I found that Podium combined the first 2 books into 1. Hopefully they continue to do so with the following books as well.

Story wise, this series is one of my favorites. This first popped up in a LitRPG forum on Goodreads, and while it's not GameLit or LitRPG everyone loved it, and so I stupidly started reading this before bed one night and ended up missing work the next day. This book has 2 things I love reading about: overpowered main characters, and town building. If you like those elements, then you will love this series.

Narration wise, I've never heard of Tom Taylorson but he did a stellar job. The first chapter I was hesitant about him, but he got good fast and I was impressed with all his different voices. I look forward to more of his work.

Anyway I'm bad at reviews, but these books are a great read, and becoming an audiobook has made them even better. and though I questioned wasting a credit on them, this was a credit well spent.

Started great, ended “good”

Honestly, this was a fun story with a great narrator! It was reasonably original and I found the main character interesting enough to keep me wanting more. Where it fell short though, was in the second half of the story. It began to feel just like any other rebirth story with an OP protagonist. It started out in such a way that I was excited to see this arch magus struggle to regain his power and exert his authority, but after about half way through the book, he immediately has no trouble conquering any obstacles before him. If there’s no struggle, even internally, then there are no stakes. No stakes, then no tension. Lots of potential, just squandered in the end.

A bit disappointing

I gave this book a fair chance - actually making it through the first “book” in the publisher’s pack. Nothing much happens. If you enjoy a know it all OP MC doing city building without any challenges or investigation into his backstory for 4 hours, this book is for you. Characterization is weak: the MCs psychotic humanitarianism is only benevolent in comparison with the villain’s habit of eating children.

The prose and performance is good enough that I could make it through about 6 hours, and could tolerate listening to the rest. It’s certainly not the worst out there. I’m sure this book is fantastic for the right audience.

another "Gary sue"

The story has some fun points, but overall it's sort of boring. The MC is so overpowered and knowledgeable that nothing could possibly harm him. At no point, in either book 1 or 2, was the MC ever challenged. The performance is decent, but hearing "young master" so many times, over the course of the books, began to.put my teeth on edge. Overall a lack luster attempt at fantasy

"Guys" this was painful

I tried really hard. I even bought the 3rd and 4th books. I will be refunding all of them. The author is fairly young and it really shows in the writing. The magic system, vocabulary, and style of writing are all akin to the most common of video game and Anime plots. Ive heard everything all before. The worst parts are the repetitive and ill used nouns that pop up constantly. "GUYS" in particular. Villains are overdone to the point of being funny. And the goals of the main character are so ethereal you really dont know where the author is goin with the story.

I dont need to read anymore. The story is predictable and the writing doesnt portray any effort or originality.

Narrator did a good job tho.

Good books

I do like how the "POV" always change and that we often find ourselves in one of a dying character. This serie, so far, is more of a town building type of book than a cultivation one. I do recommand for people who like this kind of book. I did enjoy it a lot.

awesome

I would definitely recommend this book if you like a wise mc that has a previous life to support their knowledge. Unlike many other reincarnation type books, you don’t have to worry about a weird romance starting so that was refreshing (considering he’s in his mid 60s). There is a bit of profanity so if you’re not into that then you might want to back away. Loved it, hope the rest will come out on here too!

So many Guys.

Fun story somewhat clumsily written. Lots of unnecessary repetitious statements and the like. Also the Author’s favourite collective pronoun seems to be “guys”. I swear “these/those guys” must pop up at least every second paragraph. Just one of those writing tics you can’t unsee once you notice it. Hopefully in future they will be able to bring in a professional editor to help tighten things up cause I do enjoy the story and characters.

Very Enjoyable, but One Major Issue

The truth is, I really, REALLY like this story! If you like Isekai/Reincarnation then this story is great. That said, I feel there is one issue that is so glaring, it makes me feel guilty continuing. The fact that the beast men are all voiced in the accents of colonized peoples and given the personalities of infighting noble savages, while fighting a war to reclaim their conquered lands, a claim the author seems to dispute, is so insensitive as to be shocking in the current cultural and political climate. At first I wondered if it was a choice made by the director and voice actor (both white presenting people from what I could gather) but then it turns out the language of the beast men is "Al-Bahim" which is Arabic for "(lowly) beast", and the author goes out of his way to emphasize Lark's whiteness in most of his battles with the various beast generals that it seems to be a conscious choice, whatever the final intention. While none of the humans are presented well, their positions and hierarchy of power is well preserved by both the author and the protagonist Lark. This is very disappointing.
