Publisher's Summary

The tangled lives of three generations evoke a vanished world in this, the first volume of the Cazalet Chronicle.

Home Place, Sussex, 1937. The English family at home.... For two unforgettable summers, they gathered together, safe from the advancing storm clouds of war. In the heart of the Sussex countryside, these were still sunlit days of childish games, lavish family meals, and picnics on the beach.

Three generations of the Cazalet family played out their lives - with their relatives, their children and their servants - and the fascinating triangle of their affairs....

Deeply satisfying

EJH at her best. Sympathetic characters, redemption and atonement. I can't get enough of her.

Exquisite

I came looking for Elizabeth Jane Howard after reading Hilary Mantel's homage to her in The Guardian. I actually saw the miniseries first and that made me want to experience the books even more. For me it was an audio to be savoured slowly, but directly after I finished this fist volume I downloaded the next one in the series, "Marking Time". Jill Balcon (who was Daniel Day-Lewis' mother, btw!) is a wonderful narrator -- like a good orchestra at the opera or ballet, I didn't really notice her -- she disappears so completely into each character and their world that I was never once distracted by her interpretation. Every note rang true.

This is a story about particular people at a particular time yet feels universal because the characters seem so very real. Each of them is fully drawn and allowed to be their flawed, earnest, seeking, loving, brutal selves without judgment by their creator. This is not to be read for the plot because that is basically non-existent, but the Cazalets and their adjacents can hold your heart as they breathe off the page.
