Publisher's Summary

Arden was left in the village by a dying mage, who never returned. With no way out of the village on his own, he had always held onto the hope that one day his magic would awaken and give him access to his spheres.

But he’s about to turn eighteen and it’s never come. Instead, he’s settled into his lot as a sarcastic and quick-witted innkeeper.

That all changes one night when his old flame, who escaped the village to become a mage’s anchor, returns.

Ard’s life is about to go through some dramatic changes, and he’s not ready for them.

Too bad, with magic comes responsibility and Ard needs to adapt quickly because he’s making more enemies than friends with his glib tongue. Thankfully, he’s got some help along the way.

Because he’ll need it. As the most powerful mage in the nation, he’s about to be thrown headfirst into the elite of the kingdom and a few jokes won’t stop a sword.

One of his best series

This almost takes the top spot. What a great series, The quality is what you would expect from all of Bruce's work's and I do prefer the humor in this series the most out of all his others books. I have been checking weekly for book four haha, Trust me when I say buy this and listen, you will be a very happy person

Fantastic

One of the best storylines and storyteller ( both of them) that I ever listen. It is a must for 2024. I will buy the next in the book.

boring.

honestly I found this very boring the magic was kind of interesting it not very limited. but the mc is an insufferable smart ass that for some reason wins everyone's affection because of it. and a harem of hot powerful women because he's annoying? I dunno it felt like an isekai harem but the dude was born in the world. so somehow his farmer boy charm works in cities?

I think in the last chapter it showed it best. he talks about seeing horrors and having nightmares for a long time but nothing anywhere else suggests any of that. he just killed people and dealt with monsters and such without a second thought.

Definitely not his best work (personal opinion)

Been a fan of Bruce for a while now and have read most of his other series. All of which have their own strengths and weaknesses but this one has mostly weaknesses.

Voice acting was great zero complaints there.

The story just fell off for me, some of the other comments here are overly harsh in my own opinion as well. But, one of my main criticisms is the forced injection of comedy that completely ruined the climax for me and the build up to get to the climax had terrible pacing. Thus leading it to feel disjointed. As for the rest of the book, the story line idea is great like all of Bruce Sentar’s books however the execution is poorly done.

The characters make many leaps in logic on a whim and appear educated in subjects they wouldn’t have been familiar with prior to the circumstances they reveal the information in.

World building is extremely limited, I understand the build the world as the characters experience it but as of right now (having finished the book) I can tell you barely anything about the setting of the book beyond fantasy kingdom and how the power levels of mages work.

Overall, story was disjointed and lacked world building, add that too a climax that was ruined before it started and it was very disappointing. I recommend one of his other series. I am undecided on if I will get the next in this series or not. I want to hope that it gets better but I am worried it won’t.
