Publisher's Summary

Most of us believe that we will finally feel satisfied and content with our lives when we get the good news we have been waiting for, find a healthy relationship, or achieve one of our personal goals. However, this rarely happens. Good fortune is often followed by negative emotions that overtake us and result in destructive behaviors. "I don't deserve this," "this is too good to be true," or any number of harmful thought patterns prevent us from experiencing the joy and satisfaction we have earned.

Sound familiar? This is what New York Times best-selling author Gay Hendricks calls the Upper Limit Problem, a negative emotional reaction that occurs when anything positive enters our lives. The Upper Limit Problem not only prevents happiness, but it actually stops us from achieving our goals. It is the ultimate life roadblock.

In The Big Leap, Hendricks reveals a simple yet comprehensive program for overcoming this barrier to happiness and fulfillment, presented in a way that engages both the mind and heart. Working closely with more than 1,000 extraordinary achievers in business and the arts, from rock stars to Fortune 500 executives, whose stories are featured in these pages, the book describes the four hidden fears that are at the root of the Upper Limit Problem.

The Big Leap delivers a proven method for first identifying which of these four fears prevents us from reaching our personal upper limit, and then breaking through that limitation to achieve what Hendricks refers to as our Zone of Genius. Hendricks provides a clear path for achieving our true potential and attaining not only financial success but also success in love and life.

Editorial Review

In The Big Leap, Gay Hendricks challenges us to think about our biggest fears and what’s stopping us from reaching our full potential.

We all strive for more success, money, and love in our lives, only to repeat the same up-and-down stories that make us feel stuck. We don’t seem to realize the extent to which our negative feelings are limiting us. That what stands in the way of our success is...ourselves.

Hendricks calls this success-crash cycle the Upper Limit Problem. And the good news is that you can solve it. As the narrator, Gay Hendricks speaks to you directly like an old friend. His voice is clear and wise. He reveals a thorough and effective roadmap that provides for both the heart and the mind. You’ll learn to identify the four fears that prevent you from reaching your limits, which can then be surpassed to reach what Hendricks calls our Zone of Genius.

While working as a research psychologist, Gay Hendricks began noticing that he would consistently turn to negative thoughts when things were going well. As he probed deeper, he knew he was on to something. As it turns out, it’s a habit most of us share and we don’t even know it. And now you too can go beyond your inner limits to greater love, abundance and success.

Gay Hendricks writes about personal growth and is a New York Times bestselling author. He is the founder of The Hendricks Institute and continues to train businesses and individuals in personal development.

Great message... dull delivery

I'll be honest... I think this book caused a HUGE shift in my life....however, I almost gave up listening to it several times, due to the monotone narration. I ordered the actual paper copy so I can go back and review, because I kind of 'zoned out' several times when I was listening. The heart of the message was great - I just wish the delivery had been more aligned with the power of this content!

Practical Magic Indeed!

This has been the first book on Audible that I've flown through - repeating a few parts just to savour the knowledge - and feel it was a privilege to read it, especially at this time where I'm launching into 24/7 in the Zone of Genius.

With a variety of ideas and practical exercises that each had their own impact, Gay Hendricks is truly an effective thought leader and joy - creating storyteller.

It was both validating and enlightening at the same time. Very valuable read.

I tried, I just can’t.

I’ve tried six times to get through this audiobook. Six listens, and I still have no idea what this book is about. Ok, maybe I do… something about getting out of your own way on the path to your zone of genius, which is like the party bus of your road-trip to success. The content is repetitive, unscientific and riddled with anecdotes that few persons who don’t own a beach house in Florida will relate to. The delivery is impossibly boring, which is probably why it took me so many listens to get anything out of this audiobook because it puts me to sleep faster than Tolstoy.

If you’re looking to be inspired to rise and become your most successful authentic self, go for Untamed by Glennon Doyle, Think Like A Monk by Jay Shetty, or Go Dog Go! by PD Eastman.

If you’re an insomniac, this audiobook is for you. You’re welcome.

good, but i wouldn’t say amazing

Good book but I’m not sure yet it blew me away or anything given the cult following it has. I liked the part about time management and how time isn’t real , We have control over it.

A must read for an entrepreneur!!

What a great explanation of what self sabotage and resistance may look like for entrepreneurs. They provided me a great understanding of my personal upper limit, and knowing that it exists on all levels

Sooooo good! Can see why it’s a classic.

There were so many nuggets of wisdom in this book that I am about to go back and listen again (and I’ve never done that before!). :) Some listeners had mentioned that the performance was slow or monotone, but I listened in 1.3x speed and it was absolutely perfect listening (including his great stories). 👌🏼 Highly recommend this book as a classic and my only regret is that I wish I had listened to it sooner. :)

It was okay

A few good ideas, but altogether it was a little dull. The delivery was wildly monotone, which made it hard to want to listen to. The concept, in theory, makes somewhat logical sense, but not a lot of practical application was presented.
