Publisher's Summary

Number-one Wall Street Journal best-seller.

Instant New York Times best-seller.

A game-changing approach to marketing, sales, and advertising.

Seth Godin has taught and inspired millions of entrepreneurs, marketers, leaders, and fans from all walks of life, via his blog, online courses, lectures, and best-selling books. He is the inventor of countless ideas and phrases that have made their way into mainstream business language, from Permission Marketing to Purple Cow to Tribes to The Dip.

Now, for the first time, Godin offers the core of his marketing wisdom in one compact, accessible, and timeless package. This Is Marketing shows you how to do work you're proud of, whether you're a tech start-up founder, a small-business owner, or part of a large corporation.

Great marketers don't use consumers to solve their company's problem; they use marketing to solve other people's problems. Their tactics rely on empathy, connection, and emotional labor instead of attention-stealing ads and spammy email funnels.

No matter what your product or service, this audiobook will teach you how to reframe how it's presented to the world, in order to meaningfully connect with the people who want it. Seth employs his signature blend of insight, observation, and memorable examples to teach you:

  • How to build trust and permission with your target market.
  • The art of positioning - deciding not only who it's for, but who it's not for.
  • Why the best way to achieve your marketing goals is to help others become who they want to be.
  • Why the old approaches to advertising and branding no longer work.
  • The surprising role of tension in any decision to buy (or not).
  • How marketing is at its core about the stories we tell ourselves about our social status.

You can do work that matters for people who care. This audiobook shows you the way.

What the critics say

"This Is Marketing is a very accessible way into Godin's thinking.... Godin writes in pacy, jargon-free prose and this book is interesting and useful for anyone who wants an insight into how, and why, we buy things or change our habits in any way." (The Financial Times)

Good up to date powerful reminders

I’ve read a good few marketing books (22 immutable laws of marketing is my fav) and this one added to my tool belt some real points about focusing on your niche audience. Very important.

The ramblings of a wise man

... but it's still a collection of his ramblings.

Seth has some great ideas - there are some real nuggets here, but they're largely buried in long and rambling chapters - big on theory, low on practicality.

Inspiring but not practical

Not every business changes the world, and for those who don't, this book is useless. Otherwise, it has inspiring tips for businesses that have a revolutionary vision.

Whisper louder please

I really like this book for its content. Amazing insights on empathy and focusing on the wants of the customer. However the reader's voice and the over all volume is so low it's a strain to listen to. Almost fatiguing to concentrate so hard.

there's a nugget or two

I like Seth and his work. but this one is a bit long-winded and contains a bit too much fluff.

it is focused more in the lofty strategic psychology of Marketing than actual practical solutions.

The concepts and ideas could have been summarized in a couple blog posts.

However if you like to hear Seth talk and want to spend some time in the clouds considering considering old ideas made new again with rhythmic prose then this is worth the listen

A classic – not just for marketers

Awesome audiobook… Highly recommend stopping after each chapter. I really like his voice, but it’s a little bit sleepy when you listen to it for hours straight. Still amazing advice that is relevant and inspiring!!

Narration did not keep my attention

Was looking forward to the content but the narration was so dry that I found myself glazing over and my mind often wandering. Will have to listen through a few more times I think to really take it in.
