What a podcast! After watching a ton of Haney's instagram reels and seeing the high quality medical conversations he was having on his own page, I thought let's set up a podcast on The Paramedic Coach. Haney is extremely enthusiastic about resuscitation, and learning everyday about how we as the medical system can provide better patient care.

We had a blast creating this podcast and was an honor to have him on the show, you might want to watch this back twice as Haney drops a wealth of resuscitation knowledge on this podcast, hope you enjoy the conversation.

After 24 episodes of The Paramedic Coach podcast, it is time to bring on some guests! My first guest to The Paramedic Coach podcast is my good friend Michael Borrello. He is an experienced paramedic and firefighter who has worked in EMS for over twenty years in almost every role and capacity imaginable.

Mike has been operating the channel Heroes Next Door for several years and in my opinion makes some of the most detailed and interesting videos showing what life is really like working as a first responder. Mike tours fire departments, EMS agencies, police departments all across the United States with his series "station cribs" that shows an in-depth look inside the walls of your local fire department or first responder station.

Whether you are a current first responder or thinking of becoming one, I highly recommend the subscribe to Mike's channel, Heroes Next Door.

I dive deep into the heart of what it truly means to begin a career in emergency medical services (EMS) sharing the lessons and reflections I've gathered from my journey as a paramedic and now The Paramedic Coach.

From the decisions in the heat of the moment to the reflections after a day's work, I explore the changes I would implement if I had the chance to start my paramedic career over again today.

I share with you my unique perspective on how to navigate the challenges and rewards of this vital profession. Whether you are just starting your EMS education journey, preparing for NREMT exams or a seasoned EMS provider I hope you take a pearl or two away from this video.

Let me know in the comments, what you would do if you started over today and how long you have been in EMS?

  • The NREMT ALS Psychomotor Exams Are Discontinued!

I had to report on yet another important EMS education update from NREMT. The NREMT psychomotor exams for ALS providers such as advanced EMT and Paramedic level exams are being discontinued starting July 1st, 2024.

I believe this is a good step in the right direction for our profession as one of the biggest complaints of NREMT candidates would be an inconsistent testing experience due to different types of proctors or testing centers. This will be especially helpful for those students who if failed had to previously travel to other locations (some time hours and hours away) for another attempt to pass.

Last year NREMT had removed the EMR and EMT psychomotor exams and now they have followed that up with removing the AEMT and Paramedic psychomotor exams. Now students at all levels will have their skills signed off by their class instructors and program directors.

Now every level of certification will have one cognitive examination as reported by NREMT, I never thought I would see the day!

  • NREMT Has Changed Their Scoring Reports Again!

The national registry of emergency medical technicians (NREMT) is the certification organization that allows all EMR, EMT, AEMT and Paramedics to become certified. Since NREMT has partnered up with the National Commission on Certifying Agencies (NCCA) they have making a ton of changes to update their exams.

This is the 3rd update just in the last year from national registry (NREMT) that I have reported on here on the channel. From what I can see, scoring report wise this should be the final change but NREMT does have some changes coming soon to ALS certification exams which I will be reporting on very soon! I look forward to seeing you pass your NREMT exam soon.

  • The NREMT Exam IS NOT Tricking You

After working with tens of thousands students with the goal of passing the NREMT exam, there are usually four main mistakes the student is making preparing for their NREMT exam. And the strategies I talk about here apply to every EMS certification level; EMR, EMT, AEMT and Paramedic.

The NREMT cognitive examination is broken up into five main categories: Airway, respiration and ventilation, cardiology and resuscitation, trauma, medical/OBGYN and EMS operations with 85% adult questions and 15% pediatric questions.

Too many students use resources that do not help them learn the way they think. If you are a visual learner watching videos may be a lot more helpful than reading chapters in your textbook. Another critical point is that practice questions have a place as an assessment tool but that is not studying content or making you smarter in terms of content. You should study content then assess yourself after studying the content sections.

I hope this video points you in the right direction to conquer and pass your NREMT exam! This is where I send all my students for NREMT prep below:

EMS Educators, increase your student NREMT pass rates here: https://www.videosforems.com/schools

EMS like a lot of fast paced professions that have a high degree of responsibility some people get burned out. And that can happen to anyone seeing some of the calls that we see. I know for me personally, if someone mentions, what's the craziest call you had? There's a handful of scenes that automatically pop into my head.

What's not okay is providers who make fun of new people, don't remember how it was when they first started out or even worse bring their personal drama to their ambulance work. I have always been a big on separating work life from your personal life especially when working 911 EMS.

In this video, I breakdown a poll that some of my original students answered back in 2020 on what makes a great EMS partner. I can tell you from experience who you work with really makes or breaks EMS work, try out different shifts and try to find 3 to 5 partners that really enjoy working with it will serve you incredibly well.

EMS Educators, increase your student NREMT pass rates here: https://www.videosforems.com/schools

In EMS education, we always go over the emergent situations and scenarios to make sure we ready when that 911 call comes in. But few EMS educators talk about the how to protect both the patient and yourself on "everyday calls."

In this video, I talk about patients who may be under the influence of drugs or alcohol and how to best assess them. What makes a great EMT or Paramedic is to always put yourself in the patient's shoes.

If you called 911, how would you want to be assessed, how would you like the EMT or Paramedic to speak with you about your care. After seeing hundreds of alcohol-related calls in the ambulance, I came up with my own "ETOH Assessment" that I now share with you.

This patient assessment skill that I teach you will not only be great for your documentation to cover yourself, but will also help the patient if something else is going on that is causing their altered mental status. Do this for every altered mental status call, and you can't go wrong.
