As winter ebbs away, the true horror emerges. Shaun, reunited with Abbie, struggles with he emotional roller coaster of searching for Lydia. Each day they don’t find her is another day she could be further away.

The world is in ruins. Scattered pockets of humanity rule over their own territory, and by the 24th century, a merciless political group known as the Party has seized control of the nation through military force. They'll never let that power go. Party soldiers patrol the streets around the clock, and the citizens are watched day and night by cameras and drones. The survivors are trapped. Years after a mistake of compassion and humanity, an enemy thought long gone returns to bring down a rain of violence and terror the likes of which they have never seen before. Their society, a peaceful one of trade and cooperation, has moved on from the bloody aftermath of the collapse, but that evolution blunts their teeth to be able to combat the new threat.

In the aftermath of the destruction, Shaun finds himself trapped by the winter. With little other choice, he joins a group of survivors doing the best they can. His idea of "best" isn’t always shared by the group, though. But before the weather breaks, when he wants to resume his journey, they all face conflict. Miles away, doing the best that she can, Abbie is adapting to life without power; her own situation is far from ideal. After the sound of the falling bombs fade, as the dark world they live in tries to recover, they have to find a way to adapt to their new reality.

It is 1989 and the disease resulting from the testing of experimental bioweapons has ravaged much of the world. The UK and Europe are in chaos as the virus spreads uncontrollably. The US, nominally arriving in force to offer military and humanitarian assistance to their allies, are posturing dangerously with the east and failing to unite over the common enemy of humanity.

Struggling for supplies and battling the elements, the true nature of people shows through as they face adversity like they have never known before. Nevin, as charmed and untouchable as his toxic existence has been, finds a niche in his new home; still not enough for him, though, as he plans to become more comfortable at the expense of others. But is tangling with Johnson a confrontation he can come back from?

Eve is a captive of the Party. Adam, having fled the Citadel with others, finds himself beyond the Frontier in an underground world where nothing is as he expected it to be. Nathaniel and his soldiers sweep the city clean of the Resistance, who are busy limiting the damage their exposure has caused. Starting fresh, they lick their wounds and mourn their losses. Eve is shown an alternative version of their history, but attempts to turn her against her own people meet with unexpected obstacles.

The Hive is gone, but the queen’s effect on the world lingers. As the people of Tranquility rebuild, those touched by the alien creature struggle to come to grips with what was done to them and the pain they’d caused to their friends and family. Joel Lander is no stranger to their hardships, but with a new threat looming, they have precious little time to lose. The fight for Tranquility is not over.
