À propos de cet audio
"A groundbreaking book that redefines what it means to be in a relationship." (John Gray, PhD., best-selling author of Men Are from Mars, Women Are from Venus)
We already rely on science to tell us what to eat, when to exercise, and how long to sleep. Why not use science to help us improve our relationships? In this revolutionary book, psychiatrist and neuroscientist Dr. Amir Levine and Rachel Heller scientifically explain why some people seem to navigate relationships effortlessly, while others struggle.
Discover how an understanding of adult attachment—the most advanced relationship science in existence today—can help us find and sustain love. Pioneered by psychologist John Bowlby in the 1950s, the field of attachment posits that each of us behaves in relationships in one of three distinct ways:
- Anxious people are often preoccupied with their relationships and tend to worry about their partner's ability to love them back
- Avoidant people equate intimacy with a loss of independence and constantly try to minimize closeness.
- Secure people feel comfortable with intimacy and are usually warm and loving.
Attached guides listeners in determining what attachment style they and their mate (or potential mate) follow, offering a road map for building stronger, more fulfilling connections with the people they love.
*Includes a PDF of the attachment style questionnaire

People in relationships with avoidants struggle with their lack of responsiveness and inability to tolerate real intimacy. Relationships between an avoidant and a partner of another attachment type are the largest group of unhappy relationships, and people who love their partners and who may have started families and had children with an avoidant will work very hard to try to make their relationships work better, out of love for their partner and children as well as their own happiness.

Trauma is a fact of life. Veterans and their families deal with the painful aftermath of combat; one in five Americans has been molested; one in four grew up with alcoholics; one in three couples have engaged in physical violence. Dr. Bessel van der Kolk, one of the world’s foremost experts on trauma, has spent more than three decades working with survivors. In The Body Keeps the Score, he uses recent scientific advances to show how trauma literally reshapes both body and brain, compromising sufferers’ capacities for pleasure, engagement, self-control, and trust.

Must read (especially for the broken-hearted)
Great read. Very insightful and a great tool for growth after a break-up, especially while you’re still processing. However, there is a bias towards the anxious attachment and against the avoidance. That said, there is still great foundational knowledge to take to a therapist but it won’t cure you. It’s a great start.

Life Changing
I recently went through a breakup and wanted to better understand what happened. This book had been recommended a year ago but I only just decided to dive into it. I’m sorry I waited so long to read it as I feel like what I learned will actually change the course of my life. I’m feeling really positive about future relationships as I now have a toolkit to better understand potential partners and use effective communication strategies. This book is a must read for those looking for love and even for people in happy relationships. I’ve already recommended it to several friends and will continue to do so.

Life changing!
Years of self help books, some counseling and a lifetime of feeling like ‘I’m broken’ or there’s something wrong with me. This book helped me realize it’s not my fault and there is hope. I feel more hopeful about my future and the future of my current relationship which has been in jeopardy because of my behaviour. I am 100% anxious attachment style and at almost 50 years old, it has been a lifetime of suffering in romantic relationships. Now I have hope. I am very fortunate to have found a secure partner and I believe with my new found knowledge from this book, we can repair the damage done and move towards a loving happier future. One that involves me becoming secure. Just the knowledge alone has already stopped me once from acting out in typical anxious style. It has inspired me to use effective communication and let my partner know that I have needs that have to be met for me to be happy and secure in the relationship. Thank you for this, it feels like a life changing moment for me!!
