In the post-9/11 world, people are more susceptible than ever to charismatic figures who offer simple, black v. white, us v. them, good v. evil, formulaic solutions. The rise of the internet; increasingly sophisticated knowledge about how to influence and manipulate others; and the growing vulnerabilities of people across the planet-make for a dangerous, potentially devastating combination.

Dr. Laura Anderson takes an honest look at a side of religion that few like to talk about. Drawing from her own life and therapy practice, she helps listeners understand what religious trauma is and isn't, and how high-control churches can be harmful and abusive, often resulting in trauma. She shows how elements of fundamentalist church life—such as fear of hell, purity culture, corporal punishment, and authoritarian leaders—can cause psychological, relational, physical, and spiritual damage.

In Traumatic Narcissism, Daniel Shaw presents a way of understanding the traumatic impact of narcissism as it is engendered developmentally and as it is enacted relationally. Focusing on the dynamics of narcissism in interpersonal relations, Shaw describes the relational system of what he terms the "traumatizing narcissist" as a system of subjugation - the objectification of one person in a relationship as the means of enforcing the dominance of the subjectivity of the other.

You’ve seen them in movies and on TV, but cults are more prevalent than you think - and they’re armed with strategies that can brainwash and persuade even the most unlikely of candidates. But how do individuals get involved with cults in the first place, and what steps can be taken to “deprogram” and heal those who have been drawn into these damaging groups? These questions and more are addressed in Cults Inside Out, written by leading cult expert Rick Alan Ross.

Jehovah's Witnesses number into the millions globally and are well known for their public evangelism about God's kingdom. But beneath the facade of brotherly love and organizational unity lies a captive organization in which doubts are stifled, and dissent is ruthlessly crushed. Once a Witness stops believing, they face being ostracized as a loathed "mentally diseased" apostate. Author Lloyd Evans is a well-known ex-Witness writer and activist. He draws on his firsthand, insider knowledge as a former elder to guide would-be escapees through the minefield that awaits them.

A third-generation Jehovah's Witness, Amber Scorah had devoted her life to sounding God's warning of impending Armageddon. She volunteered to take the message to China, where the preaching she did was illegal and could result in her expulsion or worse. Here, she had some distance from her community for the first time. Immersion in a foreign language and culture - and a whole new way of thinking - turned her world upside down, and eventually led her to lose all that she had been sure was true.

Dr. Stephen Hassan, a world-renowned cult expert with firsthand experience of escaping the Unification Church Cult in the 1970s (often referred to as The Moonies), offers his critical insights in the landmark book “Combatting Cult Mind Control. The #1 Best-selling Guide to Protection, Rescue, and Recovery from Destructive Cults.” This essential guide explores the methods by which groups and individuals can manipulate people's minds and behaviors in a subtle and covert manner. Hassan combines his personal narrative with extensive psychological research to provide strategies for protection, intervention, and healing for those affected by destructive cults.
In this volume you will find:
● Stories of people who fell under the sway of cults and other forms of undue influence but who were able to break free
● New information on the many sophisticated ways social media are now used for mind control
● Updates on the many types of organizations that use mind control
● Information on the neuroscience behind mind control
Hassan lays out a clear, research-based path for understanding and countering manipulative influences. The book introduces the Freedom of Mind approach, Hassan's own method developed from psychological principles aimed at helping people reclaim their autonomy from manipulative influences.
Using scholarly evidence and straightforward discussion, "Combating Mind Control" provides an informative guide for recognizing, understanding, and resisting undue influence, emphasizing the power of informed, critical thinking, and personal autonomy.

Raised as a Jehovah's Witness - Very Informative
This book opened my eyes to the tactics of high control and the impact of undue influence. I feel that I can identify these tactics better now and this has empowered me. I am more aware of the prevalence of cults in society and when people are most vulnerable and I am grateful for that. As a former Jehovah's Witnesses elder, I got an opportunity to see the policy letters and read the elder's handbook and I always felt that it was very legalistic in nature. I now understand that many of these policies are designed to control people and regardless of how well-meaning some are, we can't escape the fact that the Bible's commentary on human nature is accurate. "Man will dominate man to his injury."

A Must Read
For anyone that is in a religious organization or association with a organization I recommend reading this book. This book helped me see the undue influence that I experienced as a child and into my late 20's from the religious organization that I was a part of. I think that this book should be a mandatory read for anyone who has family or friends or an association with any organization that is religious or otherwise influencial to any degree in their lives because they might not even realize that they are being harmed by the teachings or actions of the group. This is a must read.

So good!
This book is extremely informative. Super easy to listen to. I liked the audio book so much that I bought the paper copy. I have a few friends in MLM groups that might benefit from this book, so if/ when the time is right I’ll pass it along. I highly recommend this book!
