It didn't sink in until the second listen!

The first time I listened to The F It Diet was about a year ago, I loved it, but I was just coming off a "successful" run on the Keto Diet. I say successful because I lost a bunch of weight, but it was unsuccessful because of some concerning chest pains. My doctor said no more keto, and within 2 months, I gained back a bunch of weight I had lost. I found this unacceptable so I went on a completely fat-free, low calorie, plant-based diet. I lost exactly 0 pounds in 8 months. My excuses included: my body holds on to carbs, I just can't lose weight without doing keto, I was diagnosed with PCOS a long time ago..., etc.

Then, for over 100 days, I was intermittently fasting. It started as an 8-hour eating window, averaging about 1400 calories a day. No weight-loss. So, I restricted to one eating-hour a day, 1200 calories, 23 hours fasting. I did well for about a month. I lost 10 pounds. And then one day at work, I couldn't fit in all my food into that one hour, I didn't want to eat it all. Then I began to panic about how long it would take me to eat my food for that day. Would I ruin my fast? I began to panic. I felt hungry all night and obsessed over food and what I would eat. I was in complete despair.

The next day, I woke up, after 25 years of dieting off and on and decided I was done. That's when I listened to this book again, and this time I got it. I really got it. If you're looking for a specific plan and you don't know what to eat - that is your diet mentality talking to you. You are supposed to eat whatever you want, even if that's chips and soda, because guess what? One day, sooner than you think, you won't just want chips and soda. Caroline teaches that the sooner you let go of your diet mentality and honor your hunger - no matter how scary that feels - the better!

So I am 4 weeks in. I have eaten way more than I have ever allowed myself to before. I don't check the mirror, I don't associate guilt with what I eat, I don't go on the scale, my clothes are snug - I consider this re-feeding my hungry ass self. Yes, there were cookies, so many cookies in the first week. Now, I think about them WAY less. I can see that I don't obsess over food as much already. I looked at my dozens of cookbooks today - and told them to eff off. Look, I am just done dieting. The cycle of deprivation and bingeing makes so much sense. I understand now that it is not my fault, no one can restrict their diet, over-exercise, and hate their bodies forever and have any semblance of a life. I am already thinking about food way less, and that feels like a huge win already.

So, my advice? If you are really tired of hating yourself, falling off the diet wagon, trying every new Whole30, WW, Keto, Paleo, BeachBody program - you are ready for this book. You will gain weight when you allow yourself food, when you no longer restrict, but over time, you won't want so much food - you won't even think about it like you once did. You know, when you felt like a ravenous animal totally out of control? That wasn't you! That was a symptom of restriction and dieting.

If you do like more structure and "steps" you may like the book Intuitive Eating, I have read that too, but I'm so over steps and being told how and what to eat or that exercise is "good for me" - yeah thanks, I will file this info under my "Duh" file. Real intuitive eating is just what Caroline says, throw out all the rules, eat, rest, move if it makes you feel good. You will eat more in the beginning, but once your brain understands that nothing is off limits, you won't eat as much. Our bodies are smarter than any app or calorie counter. Trust it.

Life-changing!

If you’ve ever had a negative thought about your body, or someone else’s body for that matter, you need to listen to this book.
The audio is wonderful because the author is passionate. Recommend x1 million.

The Proof is in the Pudding

Having been a long time fan of Caroline, I preordered this book to support her, even though I feel like I am now a normal eater (thanks in large part to TFID podcast). Still, I couldn’t stop listening, and I definitely got some great ideas and takeaways, and felt armed with even more confidence that I’m doing the right thing for my body (and mind - this, you'll learn, is a big part of TFID approach).

My story is eerily similar to Caroline's. Having grown up with a well-intentioned mother, she would painstakingly prepare homemade bread, alfalfa sprouts and the like, and even plenty of desserts (made mostly with some sort of whole grain flour or veggie thrown in for an extra nutritional boost). She was and still is an amazing home cook. Yet, I felt something was amiss. I would beg for all of the fun stuff my friends seemed to have in abundance in their homes. And when I got my hands on them, I would gorge on them. Fast forward to my teen years, numerous other social factors, and a self conscious hormonal teen, and I started dieting. I can't get too far into it, but much like Caroline, I tried many diets, and eventually would label myself as orthorexic, feeling superior for eating so healthy and even evangelizing my pure approach to eating to others. But then, there I'd be, binging on the closest thing I could find to junk food in my house (cue chickpea brownies!), and feeling out of control. I wondered what was up with my emotional eating and felt ashamed of myself. I felt crazy around food. I knew that I couldn't live this way for the rest of my life. I started searching for a better way and discovered Intuitive Eating (IE) and Health at Every Size (HAES), eventually stumbling upon TFID podcast.

I feel like this is a book that could help literally everyone I know. We are so entrenched in diet culture. Even those more "normal eaters" I know have weird hang ups and beliefs around eating. I feel like Caroline does a great job of making anti-diet easy and approachable, but in the most non-judgemental way possible. There is so much judgement already, and it could be easy to get as . She reminds us to be compassionate with others, and ourselves. We've all been there.

If you've been exploring the IE approach, and it doesn't feel quite right for you (some might find it overwhelming and turn the principles into rules, therefore feel like it's another diet), Caroline's approach is even more simple - that is - allow all food. If you're hungry eat. If you're not hungry but want to eat, you should do that too. When I reflect back on my approach, I really did what Caroline recommended. I didn't stick exactly to the IE principles (I found the hunger fullness scale annoying, although I think many people do like to use the scale).

TFID approach works. Yes, I did gain weight. Yes, I did eat a lot in the beginning. But, the sooner that I surrendered and trusted my body, the sooner I found peace around food. I can now confidently say that I can have my former trigger foods in the house and they get stale. I never feel bad or repent on what I eat. Although I don't weigh myself, I'm confident that I'm near my set point healthy weight. I don't want to say this will happen to everyone, but I went up a few pant sizes, and slowly notice my pants feeling a little looser lately. This entire process took about 8 months for me. If you want to feel free around food, give this book a read or listen. There is enough science and logic to satisfy any skeptic and Carolne's delivery will keep anyone from yawning. Just eat the damn pudding already!

This book was awesome to listen to, Carolyn is smart and funny and just makes sense! thank you for making this diet culture seem so ridiculous and allow us to truly love ourselves and feed ourselves. high praise for The Fuck It Diet!

Great book for anyone that has dieted

Loved it! As a personal trainer I personally think anyone who's ever had any kind of bad relationship with food and exercise should read this. I will be recommending it to my clients!
