Publisher's Summary
The eighth novel in James S. A. Corey's New York Times best-selling Expanse series - now a major television series.
Thirteen hundred gates have opened to solar systems around the galaxy. But as humanity builds its interstellar empire in the alien ruins, the mysteries and threats grow deeper.
In the dead systems where gates lead to stranger things than alien planets, Elvi Okoye begins a desperate search to discover the nature of a genocide that happened before the first human beings existed and to find weapons to fight a war against forces at the edge of the imaginable. But the price of that knowledge may be higher than she can pay.
At the heart of the empire, Teresa Duarte prepares to take on the burden of her father's godlike ambition. The sociopathic scientist Paolo Cortázar and the Mephistophelian prisoner James Holden are only two of the dangers in a palace thick with intrigue, but Teresa has a mind of her own and secrets even her father, the emperor, doesn't guess.
And throughout the wide human empire, the scattered crew of the Rocinante fights a brave rear-guard action against Duarte's authoritarian regime.
Memory of the old order falls away, and a future under Laconia's eternal rule - and with it, a battle that humanity can only lose - seems more and more certain. Because against the terrors that lie between worlds, courage and ambition will not be enough....

Different but still great
Different feel to the other expanse books, but still a great read. Ties in nicely to the strange dogs novella as well. 9 books and 5 novellas in and still pumping out the hits. Not many authors you can say that about.

Best Story in Series, Worst in Audio Quality
Performance rated 2 stars, not because of Jefferson Mays (he's great), but because audio quality is terrible. I still had Persepolis Rising downloaded and switched back to it to compare... PR is markedly better quality in every way. I don't know what happened here. Even downloading on best possibly quality did nothing. The issue is the actual recording. It's tinny and hollow and dirty. It buzzes at times when Mays raises his volume. There is no bass. I wish I could say I got used to it, but it's just so very bad.
The story here is the best in the series. The characters and the whole universe are exhausted and against insurmountable odds. It's a very "Game of Thrones" feeling where all our favourite characters are alone, the family split apart. Everyone's fighting for power when none of it should matter - there's a much more important and powerful enemy all around them. You could even draw comparisons to real life politics in the face of climate change. I can't wait for the last book and at the same time, I don't want it to end.

Perfect beginning of the end
I blew through this series in less than three months and I loved every second of it. I can't believe that I have to wait for the last book to come out - it's going to be a long cold winter without my Expanse fix.

Keeps getting better!
I felt the story lagging a bit in the most recent books, but this one brings back the high-stakes action and strange alien-ness this series started with. The ending felt like completing a chapter, and left me wanting to know more of the universe Corey is building.
