Story
There may be no tidy solutions or pithy answers to life’s big challenges, but Michelle Obama believes that we can all locate and lean on a set of tools to help us better navigate change and remain steady within flux. In The Light We Carry, she opens a frank and honest dialogue with listeners, considering the questions many of us wrestle with: How do we build enduring and honest relationships? How can we discover strength and community inside our differences? What tools do we use to address feelings of self-doubt or helplessness?

Story
It was one of the most searing images of the twentieth century: two young boys, two princes, walking behind their mother’s coffin as the world watched in sorrow—and horror. As Princess Diana was laid to rest, billions wondered what Prince William and Prince Harry must be thinking and feeling—and how their lives would play out from that point on.

Jennette McCurdy was six years old when she had her first acting audition. Her mother’s dream was for her only daughter to become a star, and Jennette would do anything to make her mother happy. So she went along with what Mom called “calorie restriction,” eating little and weighing herself five times a day. She endured extensive at-home makeovers while Mom chided, “Your eyelashes are invisible, okay? You think Dakota Fanning doesn’t tint hers?” She was even showered by Mom until age sixteen while sharing her diaries, email, and all her income.

Just as I Am is my truth. It is me, plain and unvarnished, with the glitter and garland set aside. Here, I am indeed Cicely, the actress who has been blessed to grace the stage and screen for six decades. Yet I am also the church girl who once rarely spoke a word. I am the teenager who sought solace in the verses of the old hymn for which this book is named. I am a daughter and mother, a sister, and a friend. I am an observer of human nature and the dreamer of audacious dreams.

Story
The first story Selma Blair Beitner ever heard about herself is that she was a mean, mean baby. With her mouth pulled in a perpetual snarl and a head so furry it had to be rubbed to make way for her forehead, Selma spent years living up to her terrible reputation: biting her sisters, lying spontaneously, getting drunk from Passover wine at the age of seven, and behaving dramatically so that she would be the center of attention. In a memoir that is as wildly funny as it is emotionally shattering, Blair tells the captivating story of growing up and finding her truth.

Sarah Polley’s work as an actor, screenwriter, and director is celebrated for its honesty, complexity, and deep humanity. She brings all of those qualities along with her exquisite storytelling chops to these six essays. Each one captures a piece of Polley’s life as she remembers it, while at the same time examining the fallibility of memory, the mutability of reality in the mind, and the possibility of experiencing the past anew, as the person you are now but were not then. As Polley writes, the past and present are in a “reciprocal pressure dance.”

Publisher's Summary
Narrated by Viola Davis
In my book, you will meet a little girl named Viola who ran from her past until she made a life-changing decision to stop running forever.
This is my story, from a crumbling apartment in Central Falls, Rhode Island, to the stage in New York City, and beyond. This is the path I took to finding my purpose but also my voice in a world that didn’t always see me.
As I wrote Finding Me, my eyes were open to the truth of how our stories are often not given close examination. We are forced to reinvent them to fit into a crazy, competitive, judgmental world. So I wrote this for anyone running through life untethered, desperate and clawing their way through murky memories, trying to get to some form of self-love. For anyone who needs reminding that a life worth living can only be born from radical honesty and the courage to shed facades and be . . . you.
Finding Me is a deep reflection, a promise, and a love letter of sorts to self. My hope is that my story will inspire you to light up your own life with creative expression and rediscover who you were before the world put a label on you.

Wow!!!
I've been a huge Viola Davis fan for a long time. I've followed her career, loving how incredible she is. The range. The passion. I had no idea about her as a child or much about her personal life. I'm completely blown away with the details of her life and her courage to overcome everything. I always loved her but I have so much new found compassion for just how strong she is. You will not regret this read. If you get the audible version she narrates it and does an amazing job. I just adore Viola Davis.

So inspiring.
A well told and inspiring story by Viola Davis of her life experiences. I can relate to it on so many levels, trauma, sense of self. Digging my way out of a miserable past and finding a way to stop allowing that to define me. Which I still haven’t done yet. We all need to leave the hurt behind and find the ‘me’. It was worth every minute spend listening to it.

5 stars; a must READ!!!
Viola is HONEST!!
In the Bible James chapter 5 talks about confession and the power of healing that brings. She doesn’t hold back and talks about it all; the good the bad and the unbearable. I see parts of my life in her story, especially in her parents relationship. Her story is one of pain, joy, discovery and forgiveness, especially towards family. All I can say is “Thank You Viola Davis” you telling your story is helping me face and better understand mine.

had high hopes as an actor and a fan
Her story is incredible. Unfortunately the book informed like a bad high school essay that simply lists events and covers the same stuff over and over again. There is little arc; rather than showing transformation, she unforms us it happened. After hearing her story I respect and revere her more as a person, but her her book was not compelling. Her narration was sanctimonious and grating. The only the redeeming aspects, perhaps to no surprise, was when she played other characters.
I wanted to love this book, but had to slog my way through it. if it weren't for her incredible upbringing and my admiration for her as an actor and person, i wouldn't not have made it through.

Finding Viola
Wow, Viola Davis tells a terrifying and ultimately transcendent story in her memoir. I’ve always loved her acting but this story digs deep into the pain of her youth, racism, poverty, and overcoming cards dealt. I listened on Audible because her fabulous voice and acting gave it authenticity and texture only she could supply. The book (and Ms. Davis’s spiritual healing) are deeply personal and moving. Read it or listen to it - you will not want to miss Finding Me.

Strong lady, sadly good story
I discovered Viola Davis through How to get away with murder. I probably saw her in other performances but it was only in the series that it strike me how good she was! She has a very nice strong voice. While she talks about her life and family, with a very exquisite choice of words, I could only feel big respect for what she endured, how she grew out of it still standing and strong. If there is something to take out of her sharing her story, is that one can go through many rough patches in life, it may seem as it will never end, but still one can decide how to react and go on on living: with hatred and negativity, or with the optimism of a fighter

Eye-opening, a very intense emotional story
I hope many many white people will read/listen to this incredibly true and harsh story. This dreadful and difficult road to succes of this magnificent black actrice goes straight to one's throat. An example of strength, resilience and perseverance. A must read.
