Story
Just as I Am is my truth. It is me, plain and unvarnished, with the glitter and garland set aside. Here, I am indeed Cicely, the actress who has been blessed to grace the stage and screen for six decades. Yet I am also the church girl who once rarely spoke a word. I am the teenager who sought solace in the verses of the old hymn for which this book is named. I am a daughter and mother, a sister, and a friend. I am an observer of human nature and the dreamer of audacious dreams.

Story
Trauma is a fact of life. Veterans and their families deal with the painful aftermath of combat; one in five Americans has been molested; one in four grew up with alcoholics; one in three couples have engaged in physical violence. Dr. Bessel van der Kolk, one of the world’s foremost experts on trauma, has spent more than three decades working with survivors. In The Body Keeps the Score, he uses recent scientific advances to show how trauma literally reshapes both body and brain, compromising sufferers’ capacities for pleasure, engagement, self-control, and trust.

Publisher's Summary
Narrated by Viola Davis
In my book, you will meet a little girl named Viola who ran from her past until she made a life-changing decision to stop running forever.
This is my story, from a crumbling apartment in Central Falls, Rhode Island, to the stage in New York City, and beyond. This is the path I took to finding my purpose but also my voice in a world that didn’t always see me.
As I wrote Finding Me, my eyes were open to the truth of how our stories are often not given close examination. We are forced to reinvent them to fit into a crazy, competitive, judgmental world. So I wrote this for anyone running through life untethered, desperate and clawing their way through murky memories, trying to get to some form of self-love. For anyone who needs reminding that a life worth living can only be born from radical honesty and the courage to shed facades and be . . . you.
Finding Me is a deep reflection, a promise, and a love letter of sorts to self. My hope is that my story will inspire you to light up your own life with creative expression and rediscover who you were before the world put a label on you.

Magnificent, emotional and powerful.
I have been a fan of Viola Davis' ever since I saw her play the character Aibileen Clark in the movie adaptation of Kathryn Stockett's The Help. She has always been an actress I've been drawn to so when I heard she had written a memoir, I grabbed a copy of the hardcover and bought the eAudiobook. Once I heard Davis telling her story in her own voice, I quickly opted for the eAudiobook which I listened to it on my road trip to Quebec with my husband a couple of weeks ago.
This is one of my favourite books of 2022 so far. Well-written, raw, emotional and authentic, Davis describes her life from childhood to present day from the abuse and extreme poverty she suffered in her early life, to her struggles with sexism and racism as a Black female actor to her success on stage and screen and finding out who she was meant to be. By the end of the first chapter, I was overcome with emotion - yup, sobbin' in my morning Cheerios I was - as she describes her early life. These experiences were emotional and often traumatic which influenced her relationship with the inner child that she carried with her for decades.
Despite her traumatic childhood, she tells her story without malice, without blame. Her relationships with her family are complicated (with a capital C), but she shows how they have transformed over the years and helped her on her way to being the strong, dignified, amazingly talented human she is today. I especially loved how she described her personal love story with husband Julius Tennon (may we all have a Julius in our lives!) and her feelings and experiences as a Black actress in an entertainment industry that often saw her as not as pretty, valued or talented due to her gender, race and skin tone.
As Black women, we are complicated. We are feminine. We are sexual. We are beautiful. We’re pretty. There are people out there who desire us. We are deserving. So that’s why I’m very aware of what my presence means. And that’s why I’m also aware of why I need to be emotionally healthy. Because that’s a lot of responsibility. Because you’re coming up against a four-hundred-year-old narrative.
This memoir is magnificent, emotional, and powerful. Hearing Viola Davis read her life story to me in this audiobook, in her one-of-a kind voice, was the icing on the proverbial cake. This award-winning actress and producer brings readers into her innermost feelings, her highest highs and her lowest lows with grace, honesty and humility.
I highly, HIGHLY recommend this memoir.

A Glorious Listen!
Were it possible, I would give this book ten stars across the board. Five stars don't seem adequate when I have given five stars to other books of far less value and meaning. The writing is superb, as well as the narration, but then what else would you expect from the leading African American actor of our time? I feel honored that I had the privilege. That's how impactful this book is, especially for me, a dark-skinned Baby Boomer woman of African descent born and raised in the United States of America. Need I say more? While I never suffered the horrendous next-level bullying that the author experienced in childhood, I know what colorism judgment feels like. I know how it feels when a favorite aunt said to me at twelve years old after telling her I wanted to become a model when I grew up, "You can never become a model because you're too dark," and then she chuckled after saying it. I frequently heard the half-ass compliment, "you're cute, but you'd be so much prettier if you had lighter skin."
For me, "Finding Me" is so rich in psychological and spiritual truth that it requires multiple listens to process. I have only listened once, so far, however, one listening is all that is necessary to recognize the magnificence of this work. The book should be required reading/or listened to by all women of color throughout the diaspora because the effects of racism appear to be everywhere.

Powerful, Raw, and Riveting! just as many of her characters she plays..so is she! I expected nothing less! I am left feeling even more empowered not just by her truth but ,also by her acknowledgement of the stigmatized views not just of women but, especially black women. Being a black woman myself, I hope that other women of color come forth and continue to use their platform and talent not to radicalize but to educate. Viola, I am proud of you and your accomplishments....hopefully oneday we can sit and chat over a cafe while I serve you some of my pie! until then ..I will continue to celebrate and pray for you. 5 stars; a must READ!!!
Viola is HONEST!!
In the Bible James chapter 5 talks about confession and the power of healing that brings. She doesn’t hold back and talks about it all; the good the bad and the unbearable. I see parts of my life in her story, especially in her parents relationship. Her story is one of pain, joy, discovery and forgiveness, especially towards family. All I can say is “Thank You Viola Davis” you telling your story is helping me face and better understand mine.

Finding me …too
This book gave me permission to find myself too under layers of elaborated conformity which undeniably lead to every day numbness.
