Fun at times, tedious at others
spoilerish stuff to follow:
Nowhere near as fun as the first book. Clines decision to craft the new quest/adventure around finding 7 shards was a mistake. It's just too much repetition. I found the whole thing to be quite tedious by the time I got to the Lord of the rings portion of the quest. it's like watching people play video games on Twitch....except Wil Wheaton is just reading it to you(no knock on Wheaton, he's perfect for this style of book).
Wade really gets taken down a few pegs in this one. everything has fallen apart for him since the last book(except he's still loaded and in charge(more or less). the characters have gone their separate ways and now have to be brought back together by a rather disappointing twist on a character to create the new villain while the return of Sorrento is ultimately pretty pointless with an unsatisfying conclusion.
The main conflict surrounding the ONI headsets and the true meaning behind the shards could have easily been avoided had Og simply explained it to Wade.
Art3mis comes off as pretty unlikeable in the first half of the book even though you know everything she is saying is right.
Aech gets about one moment to shine and shoto is just kind of there until he isn't.
A new character was added simply to run a side quest to bring the ultimate weapon to the final boss battle right at the last minute. I imagine there will be a spin-off telling that tale.
I expected more of a The Empire Strikes Back ending where our good guys don't come out on top to lead us into a 3rd book where they turn it around. instead we get the happy ending again and an epilogue that sets up an interesting possibility and a new direction for more.
I'm sure this will make a fun popcorn flick when they eventually make the sequel to the movie. The book is a bit forgettable though.

Not Great
As much as I loved Ready Player One, and I truly did, Part Two sadly did not deliver. This story was half as good as the first book and comes off as a rushed script for a second movie. Book One was amazing and the movie was enjoyable but really didn't follow the book. Ready Player Two feels like it was written for the sole purpose of making a second movie and is relentless in its Pop culture references.
I read Book one four times and listened to the Audiobook probably the same or more, sadly I am in no rush to listen to this story again any time soon. That said, Will Weaton did a fantastic job narrating it.

Fine ... I guess. But not even close to RP1
I found it predictable and rushed. Some of the quests seemed weird and the dialogue awkward and unnatural. I wish the author took the time to run this through a 20 year old before publishing. I'm in my 40s and still found some of the lines old and forced (no one said the words "there goes nothing" before starting a fight in the last 100 years). I'm not even going to comment on Wade crying a bunch of times throughout the book. Overall it feels like a bad screenplay for a movie with bad actors.
Also, although I'm sure there will be someone out there to misunderstand my point and rage on this, I found it slightly irritating that the book struggles hard to hit on every single political message out there. It touches on transsexuals, gay, racism, feminist movement. Sometimes at very inopportune moments and with weird arguments (like the fact there are only white people in Middle Earth - jeez, who the heck figured that out anyways?). I'm not sure why that was necessary. It did nothing to enhance the story but successfully and brutally yanked me from the fantasy world building in my imagination.
I'll definitely buy and read the next book, just because it brings on a lot of nice memories, but my expectations are nowhere close to where they were before reading this one.

Loved the new quests and new planets visited in the Oasis; How about the ending though... anyone else getting Nega-Wade vibes? Lol please insert coin for another instalment.

weak storyline
While I was real excited to get back to these loved characters, I found the story was very weak and obvious. I didn't care for the flow ,it seemed very similar to the 1st one but not as interesting. While I'm still glad that I able to visit this universe again , I was very disappointed in the over all story, In fact I caught myself rolling my eyes a few times, It seems that this was all for money , not for the love of writing; Like it was for the 1st book

Slow start but great listen!
this is a great sequel to the first book. I did find it a slow burn taking a little bit to get into it. However I'm glad I did! Such a great book!

Very well narrated
Wil Wheaton does a great job bringing this to life. The story felt like a good continuation, and continuing with the experience of the first one, was a trip down memory lane for anyone who was around in the 80’s/90’s/early 2ks.
